The movie will be based on the book of the same by “Hunger Games” author Suzanne Collins, which came out last year.

It centers on Coriolanus Snow at age 18, years before he would become the tyrannical President of Panem. Young Coriolanus is handsome and charming, and though the Snow family has fallen on hard times, he sees a chance for a change in his fortunes when he is chosen to be a mentor for the Tenth Hunger Games… only to have his elation dashed when he is assigned to mentor the girl tribute from impoverished District 12.

In Lionsgate’s quarterly earnings call on Thursday (August 5), studio chairman Joe Drake shared that the prequel is aiming to start production in the first half of 2022, according to Deadline.

Then, the film will be targeted for a late 2023/early 2024 release. Joe said that pre-production is “moving along really, really well.”

Francis Lawrence, who directed all four The Hunger Games films, will be back to direct The Ballad of Songbirds and Snakes, as announced back in April 2020.
