J.K. Rowling did not attend the Harry Potter reunion, which will air on HBO Max as part of an exciting new special, and now a source is explaining why.

The author actually did receive an invite, even though many people probably assume she was not invited to join amid her recent controversies.

Entertainment Weekly reports that Rowling was invited, “but her team determined the archived comments from the writer were adequate.” The source added that “Rowling’s statements about trans people and the controversy swirling around them did not play a part in the team’s decision.”

Over the summer, Rowling talked about the “hundreds” of threats she has received from trans activists.
