Halle Bailey Joins 'The Color Purple' Movie Musical - Find Out Who She's Playing!

It’s just been announced that Halle Bailey will be starring in the upcoming movie musical The Color Purple!

The 21-year-old actress and singer will be playing the role of Nettie, the sister to one of the lead characters Celie.

This version of The Color Purple is actually going to be an adaptation of the Broadway musical, and it will have Oprah Winfrey, who played Sofia in the 1985 film, as a producer.

On Halle‘s casting in that role, Oprah said to Vanity Fair, “She’s somebody whose presence you can feel in her absence—the memory of her, the feeling of her, the strength of her comes through, even when you’re only hearing her voice from her letters.”

Also starring in the movie are Fantasia Barrino as Celie, Danielle Brooks as Sofia, Taraji P Henson as Shug Avery, H.E.R. as Squeak, Euphoria‘s Colman Domingo as Mister and Corey Hawkins as Harpo.

If you didn’t know, Fantasia and Danielle have actually played the roles of Celie and Sofia, respectively, in Broadway productions. Danielle even received a Tony nomination!

Filming on the new movie musical will begin next month in Georgia.
