While he doesn’t necessarily have a problem with straight actors in queer roles, he thinks that Hollywood should be trying harder.

“I would say to the people who are casting: ‘Have you really looked? Why are you casting that person?’” Troye tells Variety.

He adds that for a young queer person to see someone like them on screen, authentically, it can be “life-changing for someone.”

“When they see themselves on the screen in a real way, it makes a big difference,” he said.

Troye‘s latest role in Three Months, which is out now on Paramount+, is of a queer high school senior named Caleb, and it’s not the first time he’s had a queer role. He previously co-starred in the movie Boy Erased as a queer teen in conversion therapy.

Currently, Troye is filming the upcoming TV series The Idol, from The Weeknd, and he shared that he’s starting to accept that he is in fact an actor.

“Acting is this thing that I’m just now starting to accept,” he told Variety. “I’m filming at the moment and it’s been so consistent and for so long now… I’m finally starting to accept that this is part of my job, you know what I mean? And that maybe I’m an actor.”
