Fans got the shocking news on Tuesday (August 2) that Batgirl will no longer be released.

The DC movie was to star Leslie Grace in the title role of Barbara Gordon/Batgirl, and was planned for HBO Max.

Following the Warner Bros Discovery merger, the new CEO is making changes and the film became one of the projects shelved, despite it already being done filming and going through test screenings.

Variety reports that it is strictly a financial decision. The movie started under the former Warner Bros execs who were building HBO Max, and now WBD is focusing on unscripted and bigger movie releases.

The publication says that Batgirl was not big enough (with a $90 million budget) to garner a theatrical release, and it wasn’t small enough to be released on HBO Max.

In order to release it in theaters, it would have cost an additional $30-50 million for domestic marketing and even more for worldwide marketing, and they couldn’t justify the spending for the film, as they are trying to cut costs amid the merger of the two companies.

The Scoob! holiday-centric sequel was also scrapped.

According to Variety, “several sources say it will almost certainly take a tax write-down on both films, seen internally as the most financially sound way to recoup the costs.”
