For the release in China, an alternate text ending was added in light of the original ending.

In the original ending, “Gru and Wild Knuckles riding into the horizon together after Knuckles faked his own death to escape justice,” according to Looper.

However, the Chinese censors changed it to just an affixed text, which stated Wild Knuckles was captured by authorities and sentenced to 20 years in prison, while Gru “returned to his family” and “his biggest accomplishment is being the father to his three girls.”

Film review publisher DuSir also pointed out that the Chinese version was one minute longer than the original international version.
