Jy Prishkulnik – 10 Fun Facts

• 1. My name (Jy, like “pie”) is a shortened form of the Sanskrit word ‘Jaya’, which means “victory.” Because I was not assigned a Hebrew name at birth, I got to name myself before being called to the Torah as a Bat Mitzvah when I was 13. I chose the name Keshet, meaning “rainbow.”
• 2. My favorite food is popcorn and I could probably eat it every day. In third grade, I did my science project on the best brand of popcorn based on the average number of kernels popped per batch. Turns out, Act II is number one!
• 3. Before I was 10 years old, I lived at 10 addresses, two states, and two countries.
• 4. I’m First Generation American MENA. I was born in Brooklyn, New York and I grew up in Santa Fe, New Mexico. After graduating early from high school at age 16, I moved to Los Angeles, California all by myself to pursue a professional career in acting.
• 5. My Bachelor’s Degree is from UCLA where I was an English major with a Concentration in Creative Writing, and a double minor in Theater and Film, Television & Digital Media.
• 6. I’m still getting paid for my first kiss! Allow me to explain. When I was 12 years old, I had a co-star role on a television show in which the entirety of the role was to kiss a boy. We did approximately 32 takes with my dad protectively looking on next to the director. Every once in a while, I still get a residual check in the mail for about $0.98 cents. But hey, that’s something!
• 7. I love to cook and bake. This year, I undertook creating my own sourdough starter from scratch (her name is Shulasmith). Usually, I have the Great British Baking Show on in the background for inspiration.
• 8. Most people are surprised that I walk my two dogs by myself because, together, they’re bigger than I am. Their names are Mowgli (yes, like in The Jungle Book) and Myrtle (as in Moaning Myrtle from Harry Potter, because of her bright yellow basilisk eyes). They are what I call “pure Santa Fe mutts” adopted from the Santa Fe Animal Shelter in my hometown.
• 9. I have never had a cavity…that’s right. I like to attribute this to the fact that my mum is a pediatric dentist and oral surgeon, so brushing and flossing is mandatory. I used to freak people out by saying “I see the dentist after school every day… I live with her!”
• 10. Growing up at home, I never ate meat. Even though my nuclear family is vegetarian, we started making dog food from scratch when we adopted our first dog. Now, we make about 100lbs of dog food every six weeks.
