Gabrielle Nevaeh Green Dishes on Voicing Clawdeen in New 'Monster High' Series (Exclusive)

JJJ: Congrats on voicing Clawdeen in Monster High! How has that been so far?

Thank you! That has been so awesome. When I was younger, I didn’t really know much about Monster High. When I got the audition for it, I looked up a few clips on YouTube just to kind of get the vibe. But this is a rebranding of the original Monster High, so I didn’t want to get too deep into what already was, that way I could create something new. It’s been a blast to voice Clawdeen and it’s such an honor to be a part of something that people really enjoy.

JJJ: Were you nervous to take on an already established character?

I feel like there’s always expectations whenever you do a reimagining or reboot of something, so of course I was a little nervous, but I was also very honored that Nickelodeon trusted me with the position of re-voicing Clawdeen and giving her this new personality and this new rebranded style.

JJJ: What’s been the biggest different doing voice work as opposed to acting on screen?

I would say acting for a voiceover is very difficult because you can’t see the person’s face, so everything has to be communicated through your voice and through your emotion, through your vocal cords. Whereas on screen, you can tell a lot of the story through your eyes and through your mannerisms and how you walk and how you talk, but through voiceover, all of that is kind of stripped away.

I would say, the biggest difference is that you have to work twice as hard to get sometimes half as much of the performance, since you don’t see the person’s face. Another big difference, of course, since your kind of secluded to yourself, you don’t get to have that interaction with your castmates. Especially because of COVID, we don’t always get to record with each other, but sometimes we do, which is a treat.
