Austin Butler & Sofia Carson React to Oscars 2023 Nominations

The nominations for the upcoming 2023 Academy Awards (aka the Oscars) were just announced on Tuesday morning (January 24)!

There were lots of first time nominees this year, including Austin Butler, who picked up a nom for Best Actor for his work in Elvis, which received eight nominations as a film.

Also among the nominees this year is Sofia Carson‘s latest song “Applause,” which was written by Dianne Warren for the film Tell It Like a Woman. While Sofia performs the song, the nomination goes to Dianne as the songwriter, which marks her 14th nomination in her career.

Disney/Pixar movie Turning Red was nominated as well, for Best Animated Feature Film. This is Pixar‘s 17th nomination, the most ever for one studio in the category, with 11 wins, also the most in the category.

Check out their reactions inside…

“[This role] seemed as though it was this impossible mountain to climb in front of me,” Austin shared with THR. “There were so many pitfalls and so I just was focusing on one step at a time. And really the thing for me was just honoring the life of this man and his family. And that’s why those moments when Lisa Marie and Priscilla [Presley] got to see the film and then I first saw them after… nothing I would do would ever top that. And especially with Lisa Marie not being here with us. I just wish she was here to celebrate today with us.”

“To now be here, I just feel relieved and grateful and joyous. The peaks are really high right now, the valleys are very low. But that’s what makes life feel vibrant,” he added. “I’m just so proud of everybody, and so privileged and humbled to be included among them all.”

Sofia shared a reaction video from that morning, watching the nominations announcement with Dianne.

“We’re going to the Oscar’s. @dianewarren,” she simply captioned the sweet, emotional video.

On her Instagram story, Sofia added, “Oscar Nominated APPLAUSE. @diannewarren I adore you. Thank you @theacademy.”

Her comments were flooded with congratulatory messages.

Selena Gomez wrote, “I’m crying!!! 😢 congratulations queen!!!”

Janel Parrish said, “This is AMAZING. Congrats babe well deserved!!!!”

“So proud of you!!!!!👏👏👏👏,” added Hayley Kiyoko.
