'Superman & Lois' Co-Showrunner Talks Jonathan Kent Recasting & If It Will Be Addressed in Season 3

Superman & Lois co-showrunner Todd Helbing is opening up about recasting Jonathan Kent on the The CW series.

Original star Jordan Elsass exited the show back in August 2022 after season two and his character was recast a month later with Michael Bishop taking over the role.

With the third season premiering TONIGHT (March 14), the showrunners are dishing on the recast and if it will be addressed on the show this season.

Check out what they said inside…

“It’s just an unfortunate circumstance that we all found ourselves in. David Rappaport is an amazing casting agent and gave us a lot of choices quickly, but Michael, from the beginning, he just had that essence where you’re like, ‘Wow, he really understands who Jon Kent is,’” Todd told EW.

“When we cast him, he was thrown in this wild circumstance — he had just flown from Australia, had a test, got the job, and had a bag of clothes, and that’s it. We had a lot of discussions where we basically sat him down and gave him what our interpretation was, but gave him the room to develop it himself,” he continued.

So, will the recasting be addressed on the show?

“We just wanted it to feel organic and not to hit the audience over the head with, ‘This is a new actor playing the role.’ It’s more of like, ‘This is somebody that you should feel familiar with very quickly,’ and we think that you will,” Todd shared.

Teasing Jonathan in season three, Todd said that he’s still adrift as a 16-year-old moving to a small town.

“He’s trying to find himself. Coach Gaines is still pissed at him about ruining the football season,” the co-showrunner stated. “He has some hurdles to get over, but as the season progresses, there’s something that, in episode 3, will kickstart a fire that’s lit, and then an opportunity presents itself and we explore the beginnings of this path that is going to be really fruitful for him.”

Tune in to the season three premiere of Superman & Lois TONIGHT (March 14) at 8pm ET/PT on The CW. Watch the trailer here!
