Melissa McCarthy's Ursula & Javier Bardem's King Triton Are Siblings In New 'The Little Mermaid'

There’s definitely one big difference between the original animated The Little Mermaid and the upcoming live action adaptation!

While both are based on the Hans Christian Andersen tale, the new adaptation will actually feature Ursula the sea witch and King Triton as estranged siblings.

Producer John DeLuca calls Ursula the black sheep of the family.

If you didn’t know, they were actually originally supposed to also be siblings in the 1989 animated movie, however, that idea was scrapped. They were also first introduced to be siblings in the 2008 Broadway adaptation!

In the movies, Ariel of course makes a deal with Ursula to gain legs so she can explore life out of the sea, but it comes with a cost. This puts her life and her father’s crown in jeopardy.

The newly released teaser clip, titled “Choices,” for the upcoming live action film features a moment with Ursula and Triton. Check it out here!

During a recent interview, Melissa McCarthy (Ursula) dished on what it was like watching Javier Bardem as King Triton.

“First of all, any more that lets me have Javier as my brother, I’m like, yeah, let’s do more,” Melissa shared with Fandango. “But just watching him and he is, he leads with such kindness, but watching him, there’s a reason he is who is. Before we were even going, I would find myself being like hey, stop staring at him, it’s getting creepy, because I was just like, he’s fascinating, he’s fascinating. What is he thinking? He just kind of exudes this, he’s like so tethered to the Earth.”

If you didn’t know, Ursula is getting a younger sister in the upcoming Descendants: The Rise of Red!
