Auli'i Cravalho Clarifies Her Involvement In Live Action 'Moana' Movie in New Video

Auli’i Cravalho is opening up about the upcoming live action Moana film that is in the works at Disney!

The 22-year-old actress got her start in the business by voicing the character in the original animated version, and a few weeks ago it was announced a live action version is coming.

“… this one has been whispered about for years! ✨ Moana has had such a profound impact on how we think of Disney princesses. Moana’s strength and perseverance are inspiring—to audiences around the world, to me and to everyone who helped bring her to life. ❤️🙏🏼 I’m looking forward to sharing her story in a whole new way. Eō #Moana!! 🌀,” she shared back in April.

Now, Auli’i shared an update with fans in a new video, clarifying what her involvement is in the live action movie, including if she’ll be reprising the role.

Check out what she said inside…

“Aloha Mai Kakou. As I’m sure you’ve heard by now, live-action Moana is in the works and you all have been waiting very patiently for updates. So, I’ve written a few things down,” she kicked off the video. “When I was cast as Moana at 14, it wonderfully changed my life and started my career. In this live-action retelling, I will not be reprising the role. I believe it is absolutely vital [that] the cast accurately represents the characters and stories we want to tell.”

“So, as an executive producer of the film, I cannot wait to help find the next actress to portray Moana’s courageous spirit, undeniable wit, and emotional strength,” Auli’i continued. “I’m truly honored to pass this baton to the next young woman of Pacific Island descent to honor our incredible Pacific people’s cultures and communities that helped inspire her story and I look forward to all the beautiful Pacific representation to come. Mahalo.”

While Auli’i isn’t reprising her role of Moana, it’s been presumed that her co-star Dwayne Johnson will once again be playing Maui, based on his announcement.

“I wear this culture proudly on my skin and in my soul, and this once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to reunite with Maui, inspired by the mana and spirit of my late grandfather, High Chief Peter Maivia,” Dwayne said in his original statement.
