Gigi Hadid faced backlash from supporters of Donald Trump after she impersonated his wife Melania during her opening monologue at the 2016 American Music Awards and now she is defending the joke.
The 21-year-old model did an impression of the future First Lady and poked fun at the public perception of her in the process. After she was slammed by some fans, she apologized to anyone she offended in a handwritten letter posted to her Twitter account on Monday evening (November 21).
“I was honored to host the AMAs last night and to work with some of the most respected writers in the business. I removed or changed anything in the script that I felt took the joke too far, and whether or not you choose to see it, what remained was done in good humor and with no bad internet,” Gigi wrote. “I too have been the center of a nationally televised comedy skit that poked fun at my actions, and was able to find the humor in it.”
“I believe Melania understands show business and the way shows are written and run. I apologized to anyone that I offended and have only the best wishes for our country,” she concluded the letter.

Ex One Direction bandmates Zayn Malik and Niall Horan were both at the 2016 American Music Awards and they were caught on camera having a little bit of an awkward interaction!
While walking by Zayn, Niall reached his hand out to shake hands, but didn’t stop to speak and kept walking. Twitter user @EverglowAnn recorded the moment and posted it to Twitter, which you can check out below.
That same evening, Zayn threw a bit of shade at 1D during his New Artist of the Year award acceptance speech.

Shawn Mendes and Niall Horan have teamed up for a special duet!
The 18-year-old singer invited Niall, 23, backstage at the 2016 American Music Awards to perform a special duet rendition of his hit song “Mercy,” which he performed on stage along with “Treat You Better” that same evening.

“@niallhoran is a lad,” Shawn captioned with the Instagram post. Niall also hit the stage during the award ceremony to perform his debut solo single “This Town.”
