The exciting news was picked up by the band’s fans, who noticed an Instagram post from vocal coach Valerie Morehouse.
In her post about what she’s been up to recently, she revealed that, “@5sos have a new music coming!!”
She also mentioned Ashton Irwin‘s debut solo album Superbloom, which was released in October.
This new 5SOS music news comes just nine months after releasing their last album CALM, which came out at the beginning of quarantine. It also comes a couple weeks after their big win at the ARIA Awards!
If you missed it, 5 Seconds of Summer is nominated for THREE 2020 Just Jared Jr Fan Awards- Favorite Music Group/Duo, Favorite Song of 2020 for “Teeth” and Favorite Album of 2020 for CALM. Cast your votes here!!
This marks the third time the guys have won this fan-voted award, also marking a record for the most wins in this category.
5SOS first won in 2014 for “She Looks So Perfect,” then again in 2018 for “Youngblood.”
“TEETH has been voted song of the year at the ARIA awards. We learnt so much about ourselves on the record CALM and teeth is a tribute to high energy rock shows that we all love and miss dearly,” the guys wrote in a note on Twitter.
“When you think of the song teeth, please think of going to the gig, please think of enjoying music live and loud. Thank you to our fans and family! Love always C, A, L, M.”
If you didn’t know, the ARIA Awards are held annually in Australia and are like the Australian equivalent of the Grammys!
The 26-year-old 5 Seconds of Summer singer announced his new solo album Superbloom on Wednesday (September 23).
Ashton also released his debut single “Skinny Skinny,” along with the music video.
“The Skinny Skinny MV, directed by myself and @jadeehlers faces and fights back against the demon that lives in the mirror,” he wrote on Instagram about the video. “I wanted to capture what it feels like to struggle not feeling at home in your own body. This is a video of battle, footage of the fight, a snapshot of resilience. I hope you find this video empowering.”
Ashton‘s new album will have 10 tracks that make up a “deeply personal, evocative and uncompromising” album, while “exploring his childhood, alcoholism, depression, body dysmorphia, death, addiction, despair and hope,” according to Billboard.
The guys – Michael Clifford, Calum Hood, Luke Hemmings and Ashton Irwin – appeared on The Late Late Show with James Corden and dished how they made their “Wildflower” music video while in quarantine separately.
“Our creative director would take a green screen to a house, would disinfect it all, and then would put it at the front, and we would take it and put it up. If you’re with someone in the house, then they would film all the parts. He had a list of things to do, and then he would come back, disinfect the green screen and take it to the next band member’s house,” Luke shared.
Ashton also showed that he still has his “Late Late” tattoo that he got the last time the guys were on the show. The band also performed their song “Wildflower”, which you can see right here!

5SOS‘ news comes as no surprise, as pretty much all concerts and tours are being canceled or postponed amid the Coronavirus pandemic.
“While playing our ‘No Shame Tour’ this year still remains uncertain, what is clear is that Banquet Records and a number of our upcoming UK and European dates will be postponed due to the ongoing health crisis,” they wrote in a note. “We were so excited to play these shows and see everyone but our priority is always the safety of our fans, venue staff and touring crew.”
“In the meantime, hold on to your tickets as we and our team are working quickly to reschedule as many shows as possible and will announce further details very shortly,” 5SOS added. “Keep safe… Thank you so much for your patience, we’ll send another update very soon. All our love. 5SOS”
The 25-year-old musician said that he was “apprehensive” to post about the situation for fear of losing “partnership with media outlets” but decided he had to speak out after fans made such an impressive push to get their sales recounted.
“I just want to say I appreciate you contesting and fighting for our number one record in the US. We’re left with the number two spot this week and, may I add, that I think it is absolutely astonishing and incredible that we are even at the top of those charts in the caliber of artists that are there with us,” Ashton said in a video on his Twitter.
He added, “Records were released a week early that we had no control over, which is very disappointing and quite honestly, my heart broke when I found out about that…We lost 10,000 records, it was actually more. We managed to retrieve some that were released early. It was in the 10s of thousands to begin with…Other artists have had records released early before and the charts have been amended. It seems like that’s not going to happen for us…Whether the chart position changes, I am so appreciative for everything you’ve done for us over the past few weeks.”
Listen to all that Ashton had to say here…
I’m apprehensive to share this video, I think I’ve censored myself fairly well, I feel fearful to speak up about the albums that went out early for fear or loosing partnership with media outlets… but here’s some thought’s… pic.twitter.com/yWHfpZtIT9
Since the albums were given to the public early, they would not be counted towards the band’s first week sales due to Billboard‘s longstanding policy to reflect album sale activity in the tracking week that the paying customer receives the album.
“We still wanna make our album chart next week as big as possible and want to thank you all so much, to everyone that is streaming or has bought the album,” the band wrote on their Instagram.
Unfortunately, the 10,000 albums separated the band from the top spot, leading the album to chart at number two. While they didn’t top the charts in the US, they did go number one in both the United Kingdom and Australia.
Since then, fans have been asking Billboard to reconsider. The outlet has not yet repelled their decision.
Even if the guys didn’t get the number one spot in the US, we’re still super proud of their sucess!
