Neil Patrick Harris Says Goodbye to A Series of Unfortunate Event's Count Olaf

Neil Patrick Harris Says Goodbye to A Series of Unfortunate Event's Count Olaf

A Series of Unfortunate Events is ending after season three, and star Neil Patrick Harris is saying goodbye to his character.

The 44-year-old actor played Count Olaf in all three seasons of the Netflix show.

“Can’t believe that tomorrow is my last day as Count Olaf. For over two years I’ve gotten to play in the most creative, visual, challenging, fantastical sandbox of my career. I’m super proud, and will miss it greatly,” Neil wrote on Twitter.

Neil previous said that the show was only meant to have three seasons, instead of “hoping that the zeitgeist holds us up for as many seasons as people can stomach.”

Netflix’s A Series of Unfortunate Events season two is now streaming on the service and is full of a ton of new “adventures” for the Baudelaire orphans.

Speaking with MTV recently, star Louis Hynes, who plays Klaus, opened up about one scene that he improvised with help from co-star Neil Patrick Harris.

“There were a few moments in Season 2 that I was really happy with that were improvised,” he shared, citing Dr. Faustus as his favorite. “There were some great bits in that where I had the freedom to improvise a little because he’s less of a defined character than Klaus.”

Working with Neil on the improvisation, Louis has learned new tricks of the trade.

“I’ve had long chats with Neil about when that’s appropriate to do. I’ve always struggled to find times in such a worthy script to play around with that, but Neil’s always encouraging us to try things and to take risks that might not pay off but that OK because there’s always take two.

He added, “I’ve watched Neil do it many times, so it was a real privilege for me to try my hand at something a little bit similar.”

'A Series of Unfortunate Events' Costume Designer Dishes on Baudelaire's Fashion in Season 2

'A Series of Unfortunate Events' Costume Designer Dishes on Baudelaire's Fashion in Season 2

We hate to call attention to the orphans of A Series of Unfortunate Events (ugh), but we just can’t take our eyes off of this new season’s fashion.

We’re joking though – because we love the Baudelaires, and even more, Malina Weissman‘s style in the Netflix show.

Costume designer Cynthia Summers spoke with Syfy Wire about dressing Malina as Violet for this season and how it changed from the first season.

“Our biggest issue with the kids for Season 2 was what to do with them because in the books they don’t age; of course we’re dealing with live people and children who age right before your eyes,” she shared. “We try to keep them youthful.”

Cynthia adds that there were specific looks they wanted to create.

“We masterminded how they could change along the way, which gave us some range in how we could dress them for the occasion. Clearly at Ersatz Elevator, Esmé has dressed them in their pinstripe suits identically as if they were triplets,” she shares.

“Putting a little pinstripe suit on a toddler is the most adorable thing in the world and also a pinstripe suit on Malina is great because it is very hip for a girl to wear a boy’s suit.”

It’s actually one of our fave looks!

Cynthia continues, “It brought a little more connectivity and youthfulness in the way they dress. Connectivity with the audience, which is also why we have this non-determinate range of period and even the dialogue they refer to the internet sometimes, refer to things that are clearly modern. That’s intentional to try and keep the young audience engaged.”

Neil Patrick Harris Chats End of 'Unfortunate Events' at Season Three: 'I'm Proud We're Doing Something Finite'

Neil Patrick Harris Chats End of 'Unfortunate Events' at Season Three: 'I'm Proud We're Doing Something Finite'

Let’s be honest, we all were a little bit bummed when we heard that A Series of Unfortunate Events would only be three seasons.

A little part of us all wanted it to be a little longer, however, star and executive producer Neil Patrick Harris helped us to see that ending the show with three seasons is kind of perfect.

“This is a big, big show. It’s a beast. Every book is two episodes, and every episode is an hour long,” he explained to Digital Spy. “So we’re making a two-hour movie every book, and there’s 13 books. So 26 feature films is essentially what we’re making here.”

He continues, “From the beginning, we wanted to honor the encyclopaedic and brilliant work of [Lemony Snicket author] Daniel Handler – we had no real intention of it doing spin-offs or offshoots. It ends so operatically, and yet [the ending is] so heartfelt, and so grown-up. I don’t know where else anyone would want to go with it.”

Neil adds that three seasons is actually the perfect length for the series.

“I’m proud we’re all doing something that’s actually finite, and a piece of art. It’s something that you can put on a bookshelf and appreciate for what it is, not just year after year hoping that people are still interested.”

“I would hate to make it seem as if I’m ready to be done with the show, which isn’t the case at all,” Neil added in another interview. “…The last book of the series is called ‘The End.’ And it ends appropriately. So I’m glad when it will all be done because it will exist.”

A Series of Unfortunate Events, starring Malina Weissman and Louis Hynes, is streaming now on Netflix.

Netflix's 'A Series of Unfortunate Events' Isn't Set In Any Particular Time Period

A Series of Unfortunate Events returns to Netflix tonight at midnight and there’s one big thing that we’ve always wondered – what time period are they supposed to be in?

Turns out, none!

According to Neil Patrick Harris, who plays Count Olaf, there’s no specific time period for the series at all.

“I don’t mean that the series is ‘for all time’, but that the series is intentionally not set in any single historical period or era,” he shared in a new interview.

“Even though we’re not using cellphones, we’re not speaking in old-timey English either,” he adds. “That makes it more interesting when you’re picking automobiles or pocket watches, because you want something that could come from the 60s, 70s, 80s – or the 20s!”

Neil also opened up about getting a different look, and even recording a different theme for each and every episode, too.

“A few times when we were recording the theme tune yet again, I would ask, ‘Can’t we just use the one from the last episode? Do we have to keep re-recording this chorus?’” he shares.

“The first episode of each two-parter is sung in Count Olaf’s voice, but part two always has a section sung in the voice of the character he’s portraying,” Neil adds. “That was a fun idea – but it is very, very difficult to sing as Gunther…”
