'The 100' Showrunner Pens Letter To Lexa Fans - Read Now!

'The 100' Showrunner Pens Letter To Lexa Fans - Read Now!

It’s been just a few weeks since Lexa (Alycia Debnam-Carey) was killed on The 100 and no one has felt the backlash harder than showrunner Jason Rothenberg.

After many interviews, he’s written a letter for his blog that addresses why Lexa is gone and what he’s learned from everything.

“Since our episode ‘Thirteen’ aired three weeks ago, I’ve spent a great deal of time reading letters, blogs, tweets and articles from passionate women and men of all ages who were angered and saddened that the character Lexa was killed off immediately after a love scene with our hero Clarke. I’m still processing this. I’m still learning. But I have gained perspective and more than ever, I am profoundly grateful to you, our fans.

“No series, no episode of television, exists in a vacuum. As an audience, we bring with us our life experience, the events of the time, and the collective memory of all the stories we have been entertained by (or not). Every relationship. Every love scene or act of violence. Every revelation or clich. Every original story and, yes, every trope. The worst shows retread the formula. The best transcend clich, opening our eyes to new ways of thinking, and welcome new audiences in.

'The 100' Creator Responds to Lexa Backlash

'The 100' Creator Responds to Lexa Backlash

SPOILER ALERT! DO NOT CONTINUE IF YOU DON’T WANT TO KNOW WHAT HAPPENED!

If you’re still recovering from the shocking death of Lexa (Alycia Debnam-Carey) on The 100, this new interview with executive producer and series creator Jason Rothenberg may help.

He opened up to TVInsider.com about the backlash he received for killing off such a beloved lesbian character.

“Lexa’s death triggered real emotional trauma for some people, you know?” Jason said. “It tapped into the real world, it tapped into their lives, and as a straight white male, I obviously didn’t anticipate how deeply it would affect certain people. I look at it now and I realize that if somebody had that kind of a reaction and then were to look back at the way I behaved on Twitter leading up to it, which was celebrating this relationship that then crushed them, I can understand why they would find that reprehensible. I hope that people understand that.”

Is there a chance we could see her reincarnated in some way?

“You know, the whole sort of accusation of queer baiting has me very sensitive with regard to answering the question about that,” Jason told the site. “I would say that definitely we are living in a world of reincarnation where the human mind can be uploaded into a flame and into the City of Light, and we see the people from the real world, we’ve seen Jaha there, we’ve seen Allie there, we’ve seen other characters there, so anything is possible, but I don’t want to give too much away.”

Jason also teased, “In this world, it doesn’t matter, you can die if you’re gay or straight, you can die if you’re a series regular or not. This is going to be a crazy season…it’s already been a crazy season. More characters that we love are going to die this season and it’s going to happen soon.”

Alycia Debnam-Carey Reflects On Social Media Reaction Over 'The 100's Lexa's Death

Alycia Debnam-Carey Reflects On Social Media Reaction Over 'The 100's Lexa's Death

Alycia Debnam-Carey happily signs autographs for her fans during the Fear of the Walking Dead panel during PaleyFest held at Dolby Theatre in Hollywood on Saturday (March 19).

During the panel, the 22-year-old actress opened up about leaving Lexa behind on The 100 and the social media reaction the character caused.

“I think it’s incredible to see such a passionate response,” she shared. “I think it’s important for me to note that that decision was never made from a negative point of view; it was never an attempt to bait or to enflame a social issue. It was a creative choice and it didn’t come at the expense of thinking about a social issue – maybe it should have more.”

Alycia continued, “But I definitely want fans to think that the love for Lexa on the show and a collaboration that we’ve all made on that show has only come from a good place.”

So, could Lexa ever be resurrected on the show? “I must say, I always – from experience when I watch TV shows and I see characters leave without a proper explanation or leave with not enough time, I get irritated. I like it when there’s a clean-cut reason or a defining moment where they have to go. Whether that’s death or not, I think that’s subjective,” Alycia said.
