Katy Perry Says New 'American Idol' Needs to Produce A 'Legit' American Idol

Katy Perry Says New 'American Idol' Needs to Produce A 'Legit' American Idol

Katy Perry shines in silver at the Disney ABC Television Group Hosts TCA Winter Press Tour 2018 party on Monday night (January 8) in Pasadena, Calif.

The singer hit up the American Idol panel with fellow judges Luke Bryan and Lionel Richie, as well as host Ryan Seacrest to chat about the rebooted reality program.

Here’s everything you need to know about it:

What days will it air?

American Idol will return on March 11, airing both Sunday and Monday — up until the all-athletes season of DWTS premieres on April 30th. It will go down to just one day then — Sunday. The two-night finale will air on May 20th and 21st.

No more bad auditions

Showrunner Trish Kinane shared that the new ABC version will nix all bad auditions.

“It doesn’t feel comfortable to put borderline unstable people up on stage and laugh at them,” she shares. “I think that people once thought that the judges saw everyone, and now you know there’s a line of producers who screen before them…We want the humor, but we don’t want the exploitation.”

Seeking a star:

Katy is passionate about finding a star from the program: “Literally, we are wasting our time if we do not find a star. You know, America doesn’t need another star. They need, like, a real legit American Idol.”

She adds, “It’s a crowded place, and I take it really seriously, sometimes to my detriment. But I’m very cut-and-dry and get straight to the point, but I think that is our purpose.”

Katie Stevens Wanted To Be Known For More Than Just American Idol

Katie Stevens Wanted To Be Known For More Than Just American Idol

Do you remember when Katie Stevens was on American Idol?

If you don’t, you’re missing out because she was insanely good.

Katie spoke to THR recently about her time on the reality show and how she moved past just being “Katie from Idol”, and onto a really amazing acting career.

“I was getting discouraged in music,” she revealed after her stint on the show. “I started auditioning…I was trying to network with anybody that I possibly could. I was taking two acting classes a week and auditioning.”

Katie continues, “I didn’t necessarily hit rock bottom, but I was working at Sprinkles Cupcakes and trying to make money, not wanting to tell anybody that I was getting a job because other people that I knew from Idol were like, ‘Why aren’t you singing places and making money off of the Idol name?’ And I was like, ‘Because I don’t only want to be known for that.’”

And now, she isn’t. She’s known for Faking It, and her own music, and The Bold Type, and there’s even more she will be known for.

Katie still has nothing but love for Idol though: “American Idol gives people really wonderful opportunities, and they shouldn’t take flack for what people do with that opportunity after they leave the show.”

“A lot of casting rooms I was in, that was the only thing on my rsum, and people would just be like, ‘Oh, here’s Katie Stevens. Another American Idol girl who thinks she could be an actor,’” she remembers.

Katie is proof that anyone coming from American Idol can do big things.
