A few months ago, JJJ pointed out that Meg Donnelly looked a lot like this rendering of a real life Anastasia, based on the animated film.

The portrait, done by Finnish artist Jirka Väätäinen, looks so much like Meg – and over the weekend, Meg actually dressed up like her!

The Zombies star wore a bright yellow dress with a thick blue belt, much like the dream dress the character wears in the “Once Upon a December” scene in the animated movie.

Meg, along with Free Rein‘s Jaylen Barron and Violett Beane, were spotted at the 2018 Women’s Image Awards, which celebrate outstanding film and television that promotes non-stereotypical, female characters to enhance the value of women and girls.

We’ve always admired Finnish artist Jirka Väätäinen‘s gorgeous work on his Instagram.

He’s re-imagined Disney princes, princesses and even villains of what they would look like in reality, and now, he’s put a spin on just what Anastasia from the movie would look like.

Yes, we know she was a real historical person and there are actually portraits of the Grand Duchess before her untimely death to see and look at — but we’re talking about the animated movie character.

If anyone was casting a movie based on his interpretation, they need to look at Meg Donnelly asap!

Meg, who currently stars on ABC’s American Housewife and will be in Disney Channel’s Zombies, is the actual, real life counterpart to Jirka‘s illustration!

We are geeking out over this first look at the upcoming Anastasia musical for Broadway!

Starring Christy Altomare and Derek Klena, the show is inspired by the the film.

The musical transports us from the twilight of the Russian Empire to the euphoria of Paris in the 1920′s, as a brave young woman sets out to discover the mystery of her past.

Pursued by a ruthless Soviet officer determined to silence her, Anya enlists the aid of a dashing con man and a lovable ex-aristocrat.

Together, they embark on an epic adventure to help her find home, love and family.

When you were younger and watched the movie version of Anastasia, villain Rasputin probably scared you to bits. In fact, that animated character still does scare us!

But have no fear if you’re going to see the Broadway musical, because he won’t be part of it.

For the musical, Rasputin and Bartok, the sidekick bat, have been completely removed from the plot, instead replaced with a Bolshevik general who tries to stop Anya from claiming her birthright.

“Well, Rasputin is not in our version, nor is Bartok (and everyone loves him, including me.),” lyricist Lynn Ahrens told to HelloGiggles. “But we really didn’t want to repeat the animated movie onstage – and those two ‘cartoon’ characters simply didn’t fit this version.”

So, who is the new villain? That general, of course.

“You’ll be happy to know that we’ve replaced Rasputin with a much more complicated and charismatic antagonist, a Russian officer played by Broadway’s sensational Ramin Karimloo. He brings something both menacing and sympathetic to the role.”

If you grew up with the animated movie musical Anastasia, then you are probably just as excited as we are for the new Broadway production of the story to start performances this month!

A new promo video for the musical was just released and it features the show’s star Christy Altomare singing the signature song “Journey to the Past” along with some beautiful imagery.

Performances for the musical begin on March 23 and the official opening night is on April 24.
