Tonight’s the premiere of the final season of Jane the Virgin and we’re about to get all our answers about the return of Michael answered.
Showrunner Jennie Snyder Urman chatted with TV Guide about the comeback of the character, played by Brett Dier, into Jane’s (Gina Rodriguez) life.
“His return just turns [Jane’s] life upside down in every single way,” she shared. “The events of the finale and that last image of this person…is ostensibly Michael—you will find out right away if it is or isn’t Michael, and it throws everything into flux, every character into flux.”
She adds, “It affects the whole season. It really sets us up on our arc for the season.”
How does that change Jane and Rafael’s (Justin Baldoni) relationship, if at all?
“What I can say is that the selfless act of Rafael bringing Michael back, hearing that Michael is alive and bringing him back to her, is a sacrifice and a move that I don’t think Season 1 Rafael would have done.”
Jennie continues, “The selflessness of it is romantic for Jane. But the events of the finale resonate throughout this whole [season].”
Jane the Virgin is back TONIGHT @ 9PM ET/PT on The CW.

Now, we finally know just why the show brought the character back from the dead.
Showrunner Jennie Snyder Urman reveals that Michael is back because the series is a telenovela.
During the show’s panel during the 2019 Television Critics Association press day on Thursday (January 31), she shared she was “encouraged to go for the shocking twist by show writer Carolina Rivera.”
She adds that she “knew it was a trope that we were going to save up till the end,” but that it was crucial to do it “in a way that is both believable enough and also true to the tone and the spirit of the show.”
Brett always knew that there was a possibility Michael could return to the series.
“He knew it was a telenovela and there was always a possibility, but I also knew that his death had to land and that the show had to exist without him for a certain amount of time,” Jennie added.
And yes, Gina Rodriguez so knew about Brett coming back, saying that Jennie told her the twist way before everyone else knew and then swore her to secrecy.
The new show is set in 1990-something, and since Lainey (Michalka) still hasn’t achieved rock ‘n’ roll greatness, she returns to William Penn Academy as the new music teacher.
Lainey has a hard time adjusting to being an authority figure, but she realizes she might not be so bad at it when she discovers a kindred spirit in Principal Glascott’s niece, Felicia (Crow).
Meanwhile, Coach Mellor (Bryan Callen) struggles with Michael Jordan’s influence on modern-day basketball.
Brett Dier and Tim Meadows also star in the new show.
Schooled premieres TONIGHT, January 9th @ 8:30PM ET/PT on ABC.
