Shane Harper is prepared for all the nay-sayers who are coming after the Dirty Dancing remake — in fact, most of the cast is.
The actor, who plays Robbie in the TV special tonight, opened up about taking on a remake of a classic movie like this.
“Oh yeah, we’re terrified. Everyone understands that the comparisons are going to come. Our version of it is a musical. It’s a reimagined universe that this Dirty Dancing story is happening in,” he shared.
But, he still knows that everyone watching will actually enjoy it.
“The script is incredible. It’s Lionsgate and our producer and director and musical composer, they’re all so good,” Shane adds. “It’s going to be amazing, it’s going to be incredible.”
“We know it’s going to be compared too, and I don’t want anyone to be too harshly criticized. No one’s going to be Patrick Swayze. He was a legend.”
It follows the story from the beloved 1987 film told from a fresh perspective, diving deeper into the iconic characters, showcasing their progression and tackling social themes like race, women’s rights and the socio-economic division in the country at that time.
Some of the originals film’s classic songs will be performed too, including “Time of My Life”!

Are you excited to see Abigail Breslin in ABC’s upcoming Dirty Dancing musical?!
The network just released the first official trailer for the three-hour filmed event, which tells the story from the beloved 1987 film in a fresh perspective.
The ending dance of Dirty Dancing is such an iconic piece and JJJ is living for these sneak peek pics of it all!
Starring Abigail Breslin and Colt Prattes, the TV special will premiere on May 24th on ABC — and you bet we will be watching.
While many are thinking this is an exact remake of the 1987 movie, Abigail doesn’t want you to think of it that way.
“It’s a reimagining, not a reenactment,” she told Out mag. “I don’t believe that stories are only meant to be told once. You can tell them differently.”
Abigail adds, “I’m not doing an imitation of Jennifer Grey‘s iconic performance in the original. Instead, I tried to see Baby as how she related to me, and hopefully I do the character justice.”
“I don’t want to sound too self-aggrandizing, but I think the movie’s really dope. I think you’re going to love it.”
“Growing up I watched this movie almost every weekend,” he admitted on Instagram recently. “It inspired me to start dancing and still inspires me every time I see it.”
Colt added, “Beyond honored to be a part of this.”
