Debby Ryan Opens Up About Hopes For 'Insatiable' Season 2

Debby Ryan is still over the moon about the season two renewal for her Netflix series, Insatiable.

Talking with IBT, the 25-year-old actress opened up about what she’d like to see in the new season coming.

“[I'm] interested in exploring the places that Patty continues to look,” she says about the void that’s inside her.

Debby also hopes that the new season will see all the different places that people continue to look to satisfy that insatiable part of them.

“Some people have found great success based off of this hole within them that is never enough and constantly looking, and they’ve found and built incredible, insane things,” she adds. “Also, some people have been hospitalized. Some people have made their mothers feel like failures. I have. I’ve looked in the wrong places. And now we know where not to look.”

“I’ve seen other people look in places, and I knew that I didn’t have to go and look there because it wouldn’t show me anything I wanted to see.”

Insatiable season one is streaming on Netflix now.

The show, which revolves around an overweight teenager (Ryan) who seeks revenge on those that tormented her after she loses the weight, was highly criticized. Debby and the film’s cast and crew responded to the backlash.

“We’re not in the business of fat shaming. We’re out to turn a sharp eye on broken, harmful systems that equate thinness with worth,” Debby said.

The 25-year-old actress joined co-stars Alyssa Milano, Dallas Roberts and creator Lauren Gussis at the event to chat about their new Netflix series, Insatiable.

“Initially, I just liked this girl,” Debby shared about what drew her to the project, ahead of being able to speak with Lauren about Patty’s arc. “The things I didn’t like about myself, were very visible in her.”

She added, “You go through this story with this person and I’m angry on Patty’s behalf…I’m angry at the lies that I was fed by culture and media that affected me in the way that they did. I’m angry at myself for letting that happen. Being able to see that and move forward, [we] were the same person.”

'Insatiable' Creator Also Wants You To Watch The Show Before Writing It Off

'Insatiable' Creator Also Wants You To Watch The Show Before Writing It Off

Debby Ryan‘s new Netflix series Insatiable is getting a lot of backlash after the trailer debut as the show seems to be all about glorifying fat shaming and if you’re thin, then you must be happy.

However, as Debby explained last week, that’s not what the show is about.

Now, writer/producer Lauren Gussis talked with Vanity Fair about the same issue.

Since the trailer debuted, over 200,000 people have signed an online petition for the streaming service to not air it.

“The trailer is not representative of the show as a whole, but it is a representation of where the story starts,” she says. “The story is not ‘somebody gets thin, becomes happy, and gets everything she wants.’ It’s actually quite the opposite, but the story has to start somewhere.”

In fact, Lauren says that Patty, played by Debby, is just as unhappy as she was before—dealing with a single, alcoholic mother; crippling bouts of insecurity; and a bottomless pit of anger.

“Patty’s actually more miserable because now she doesn’t have any protection,” Lauren adds. “She has no tools. People assume things about her because she looks a certain way, but she doesn’t know who she is; she never really did.”

“She focused all her attention on what things would be like ‘if only.’ Then she gets the ‘if only,’ and it doesn’t fix her. Now she’s even more mad and devastated, so she’s behaving very badly.”

And like Debby, Lauren wants you to give the show just a little chance.

“I want this to be a starting point for a conversation. I had a lot of mentors who encouraged me to tell my stories. I encourage other people to tell their story.”

Insatiable premieres Friday, August 10th on Netflix.

Debby Ryan Hopes Fans Will Watch 'Insatiable' Before Passing Judgment

Debby Ryan Hopes Fans Will Watch 'Insatiable' Before Passing Judgment

Debby Ryan wants to clarify some misconceptions about her upcoming Netflix series Insatiable.

The former Jessie star took to Instagram on Saturday (July 21) to respond to some of the opinions she’s already heard people share.

“As someone who cares deeply about the way our bodies, especially women’s, are shamed and policed in society, I was so excited to work on Insatiable because it’s a show that addresses and confronts those ideas through satire,” she begins. “Satire is a way to poke fun at the hardest things, bring darkness into the light, and enter difficult conversations.”

“I have to laugh at my pain, otherwise I’ll dissolve and weep and get stuck instead of working through it,” she continues. “It’s a coping mechanism and, for a lot of people who are telling these stories, a healing mechanism. Over the last few days I’ve seen how many voices are protective and fiercely outspoken about the themes that come into play in this story. I’m grateful for that, and comforted by it, because I want those stories told right too.”

Debby Ryan Dishes On New Series 'Insatiable': 'Nothing Is Off Limits'

Debby Ryan Dishes On New Series 'Insatiable': 'Nothing Is Off Limits'

Debby Ryan is talking all about her new series, Insatiable, in a brand new interview and it’s getting us even more excited to see it!

The 25-year-old actress revealed to Cosmopolitan that nothing is off limits on the show.

“Everything that I’ve gone through and gotten therapy for and talked with my friends about, every kind of trauma and confusion and illness and strange reckoning in my life and the life of my loved ones, are dealt with on this show,” Debby shares.

“Comedy is a really important way for us to be able to talk about the things that are already very present and it gives us room.”

Debby also dished on her character, Patty.

“We all wait for our lives to begin until we are a little bit more like this or a little bit less like this,” Debby says. “This is a story of a girl who has just achieved what she thought would be the jumpstart of her life, and now realizes that she spent a lot of her identity waiting for this moment and doesn’t know who she is.”
