Gina Rodriguez Dishes On 'Jane The Virgin' Spin-off

Gina Rodriguez wears a vintage inspired green dress for the Jane the Virgin panel during the 2019 Winter Television Critics Association Press Tour at The Langham Huntington Hotel on Thursday (January 31) in Pasadena, Calif.

The actress and producer, along with showrunner Jennie Snyder Urman, opened up about the recently announced spin-off of the show.

Titled Jane the Novela, the new series was described as a telenovela anthology series where each season is based on a different fictional novel “written by” Jane Villanueva (Rodriguez) and narrated by the author herself.

The first installment takes place at a Napa Valley Vineyard, where family secrets (and family members) don’t stay buried for long.

While fans are excited for the spin-off, don’t expect to see your fave Jane the Virgin characters in the first season.

“Once we get a year where we establish new characters, then we can see what comes… I love [the Jane the Virgin] cast I’d be lucky to work with every single one of them again and I really hope to,” Jennie shared.

Gina added that the spin-off is “fantastic. The pilot is unbelievable. We hope we can give something just as great as we did with Jane the Virgin.”

'Jane The Virgin' Decided To Bring Michael Back From The Dead For This Reason

'Jane The Virgin' Decided To Bring Michael Back From The Dead For This Reason

The shock of the century was when Michael (Brett Dier) walked through that door in Jane The Virgin‘s season finale last year, right? Right.

Now, we finally know just why the show brought the character back from the dead.

Showrunner Jennie Snyder Urman reveals that Michael is back because the series is a telenovela.

During the show’s panel during the 2019 Television Critics Association press day on Thursday (January 31), she shared she was “encouraged to go for the shocking twist by show writer Carolina Rivera.”

She adds that she “knew it was a trope that we were going to save up till the end,” but that it was crucial to do it “in a way that is both believable enough and also true to the tone and the spirit of the show.”

Brett always knew that there was a possibility Michael could return to the series.

“He knew it was a telenovela and there was always a possibility, but I also knew that his death had to land and that the show had to exist without him for a certain amount of time,” Jennie added.

And yes, Gina Rodriguez so knew about Brett coming back, saying that Jennie told her the twist way before everyone else knew and then swore her to secrecy.

Jane the Virgin returns in March on The CW.

It’s always good news when The CW announces that new shows are on the way, but when they are spinoffs of our favorite ones, that makes it incredible news.

Both Riverdale and Jane The Virgin have new spinoff pilots on the way. Something important to note is that this just means a pilot episode will be created, but the shows are not officially heading to television yet.

Jane the Novela will be an anthology series that follows one of Jane’s fictional novels each season with the character narrating the story. The first season “will take place at a Napa Valley vineyard, where family secrets (and family members) don’t stay buried for long,” according to THR.

Gina Rodriguez will serve as one of the executive producers. She tweeted, “We got good news from the CW! Jane will be birthing a SPIN OFF!!!!! Jane The Novelas!!!”

A Riverdale spinoff titled Katy Keene will follow “the lives and loves of four iconic Archie Comics characters — including titular fashion-legend-to-be Katy Keene — as they chase their twenty-something dreams in New York City.” Archie Comics chief creative officer Roberto Aguirre-Sacasa will be running the show!

More pilot orders included an untitled Nancy Drew drama, the Batwoman pilot starring Ruby Rose, and a reboot of the 1987 vampire movie Lost Boys.
