Shawn Mendes hugs some of the students from Florida’s Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School while performing together at the 2018 Billboard Music Awards held at the MGM Grand Garden Arena on Sunday (May 20) in Las Vegas.
The 19-year-old singer was also joined by Khalid while performing their song “Youth.”
Shawn recently opened up about how the violence around the world inspired the song.
“I was touring around Europe when the events of Manchester and London happened, it was very overwhelming,” Shawn previously said about the song. “I wanted to write something about it but it had to be about the feeling for us as a generation when one of these things happens. So I wrote a song about our youth, a feeling that can’t be taken away from us. It’s the most important song on the album.”
The pair took the stage together to perform their song “Love Lies” at the 2018 Billboard Music Awards, held at the MGM Grand Garden Arena on Sunday (May 20) in Las Vegas, Nevada.
Earlier in the evening, Khalid won the award for Top New Artist! Congrats on the huge honor, Khalid!

“I’ve known Khalid for about maybe a little over a year now. We just immediately hit it off. It’s just a really, really awesome friendship, like talking all the time. When things first really started happening for him, we were always like always we gotta get together, we gotta make music, we gotta make music,” Shawn explained to Zane Lowe in a Beats 1 radio interview.
“And I was in London and I was very close to all that time, right after the Manchester thing. In London there was the attack on the bridge. And I remember that day thinking like, OK, I gotta text him. When I texted him, I said when we get together, we have to make a statement. We have to move. We have to write about what’s going on in life and how the youth is feeling because I think we have the voice to do that.”
