Pentatonix's Kirstin Maldonado Dishes On How She Found Her Solo Sound

Kirstin Maldonado is all over New York City right now, promoting her new solo EP, Love.

The singer and Pentatonix group member stopped by Build Series today (July 26) to dish about her music.

Just the day before, Kirstin opened up to the Elvis Duran Show on how she found her particular solo sound.

“Honestly, I had really amazing writers that I worked with and we went into the studio and we didn’t have any pretense on what it needed to be or like what I wanted to sound like,” she shared. “It was free rein, free territory.”

Kirstin adds, “It was always kind of hard with Pentatonix too, because you have to go in thinking like this needs to be an a capella song and we’d like it to feel poppier.”

But her solo sound was much different.

“With this, it was nice just because I felt like I could just say whatever and do whatever and the sound kind of just formed, which was really cool.”

Kirstin Maldonado Says Pentatonix Will Always Support One Another In Everything

Kirstin Maldonado Says Pentatonix Will Always Support One Another In Everything

It might seem like Pentatonix is splitting up, but they’re not.

Member Kirstin Maldonado, who is just going by kirstin for her solo career, revealed that the now quartet are still going to be Pentatonix.

“They are super supportive,” she shared on The Elvis Duran Show this week. “We’re all supportive of each other’s music, I think because we like hearing each other be able to express ourselves artistically in ways we wouldn’t be able to in the group.”

Kirstin adds that kicking off her solo career is a little weird without the group all around her.

“I’m always like where is everyone? I feel like I’m showing up to places and I’m like where is everyone?” she laughs. “Generally, it’s like obviously, there are five of us total, but then we have the people around us, so it’s like a big crowd like we walk in and with like an entourage in a way… No, it’s just me and my pals… It’s really amazing too.”

Kirstin adds that working with an entirely new band and people is still really exciting.

“It’s still like the energy is on stage and who you are performing with it’s just different. It’s really fun, I love it, it’s been really cool.”

Avi Kaplan has stepped back from the band and Kirstin Maldonado has a new solo single out — but that doesn’t mean Pentatonix is breaking up.

“We’re not broken up,” Kirstin dished to ET while promoting her song, “Break A Little”.

She adds, “Honestly, we just want the best for each other … We’ve been a family for the past 6 years, and we’re all just taking new chapters as it comes, as life changes, as life comes at us.”

“I fulfill a part of myself in Pentatonix,” Kirstin continued. “And then, we can all step away individually, and do the specific things we like, because we’re all so different in musical tastes.”
