'Looking For Alaska' Creators Dish on Keeping Car Accident a Mystery

The creators of Looking For AlaskaJosh Schwartz and Stephanie Savage – are opening up about keeping Alaska’s death such a mystery.

The pair recently spoke about their decision to hide so much of what actually happened.

“Part of what the story is, what John [Green]‘s book is about, is the feeling of the loss of control after someone you love has died and all you want are answers,” Josh told TV Guide. “If you could somehow change what happened, or take back some control of the situation, and you really can’t. There are some things for which there are no answers to, and what happened exactly in that accident is something that, regardless of what the answer could be, did not change anything. So that’s what informed the decision.”

“We just felt like as writers and as people telling a visual story — so much of the part of John‘s book is not knowing what happened — that we didn’t feel comfortable taking a stand on what we thought did happen and filming that,” Stephanie added. “That’s not what the story is about, and we couldn’t come to any consensus, anyways, about what we thought that was.”

Charlie Plummer Says Having John Green On The Set of 'Looking For Alaska' Was 'Terrifying'

Charlie Plummer Says Having John Green On The Set of 'Looking For Alaska' Was 'Terrifying'

Charlie Plummer poses with Kristine Froseth at the Looking For Alaska SAG-AFTRA Foundation Conversations event on Wednesday night (October 16) in Los Angeles.

The two are just a day away from the series premiering on Hulu.

In a recent interview with Entertainment Weekly, Charlie and Kristine both opened up about what it was like having author John Green on the set while they were filming.

“I remember he was there for our first day of shooting and I was already just so terrified to start,” Charlie explained. “Before we began the shoot, we were so fortunate to get to go to the school that he attended in high school. He shared so much of himself and his life with us. It became so clear how important this story is to him and was for his career, but also just in his life.”

“He wrote the book obviously for readers, but now for us as actors, having people embody them was somewhat of a therapeutic thing for him,” he adds. “But it was really terrifying for me. I’ve never cared more about a story that I’ve gotten to be a part of, and then to have the guy responsible for that just be watching you attempt to do that is pretty surreal.”

Kristine also shared that “it was really lovely having him as such a helpful creative force. He was always really supportive and gave us so much freedom and trust. He really blessed us by telling us, ‘These are your characters now,’ and it was really powerful.”

“Being able to keep that in mind and really fight for that but at the same time let it be our own thing, we were just really lucky that John was so supportive of that from day one,” Charlie added. “It could have so easily been a different situation, but he has been there every step of the way and given his blessing with everything and that has meant so much doing this.”

Looking for Alaska is out on Friday, October 18th on Hulu.

When asked if the cast were ones to pull pranks on the set, all four said no.

“We actually were pretty tame for the context of the show,” Denny shared. “Most of the actors on the set were already working actors and we just came into it trying to be professional and most of the fun was had on camera.”
