The fan fave to take over the role is Luke Benward, but even he doesn’t know what’s happening and he admitted he was messing around with fans about it.
“There’s nothing to it right now,” Luke told ET. “I just like playing with people. People were getting excited about it, I thought might as well instigate a little bit. (Laughs.) Yeah, I’m an antagonizer. I have been since I’ve been a little kid, so sometimes I can’t resist.”
However, Luke isn’t ruling out the possibility.
“Yeah, absolutely. I’ll be honest, I don’t really remember John Ambrose,” he says. “I’ll probably have to watch the movie again but like I said, I’d love to work with my boy. We’ll have to see how it shakes down, but I’m not opposed to it.”
Plus, we’d get Luke and Noah Centineo in the same movie. We wouldn’t say no to that either.
Here’s hoping we hear something soon about the role!
The Dumplin’ actor and the To All the Boys I’ve Loved Before star – aka the internet’s Netflix boyfriends – have been friends for a long time now.
“Noah‘s a mentor of mine,” Luke said with a smile in a new interview with Today. “Me and Noah are buddies. I met him probably seven years ago-ish, like right when I moved to LA.”
“I had a little photo shoot,” Luke continued. “We actually shot in his dad’s loft in downtown LA. So I met him then, and obviously he’s like the most charismatic guy on the face of the planet, so I immediately knew who he was and, yeah, been friends since.”
Luke also gushed about his “fan boy” feelings for Dumplin’ co-star Danielle Macdonald, calling her “next level,” and more!
While nothing has been announced, the 23-year-old actor is definitely on board.
“I know that there is a sequel in the books. She [Julie Murphy] just wrote ‘Puddin’’, and I believe the lead of that would be Maddie Baillio’s character, Millie, but I haven’t received any news that it’s actually going to production,” Luke shared. “I just know there is a template for it, but we’ll see in this next year.”
Luke also opened up about why Bo was a favorite character of his to play.
“I was really refreshed, honestly, to get this boyfriend – the boy-next-door love interest – who isn’t just a monotone side character,” he shared. “He’s a very pivotal character, and he’s very dynamic, and has these beautiful scenes with Willowdean that are so honest and raw and are truly the through line of the main story, which is accept yourself.”
Luke Benward and Dove Cameron go way back to their Disney days and it’s a on-and-off screen friendship JJJ is obsessed with.
We were excited to hear that the two would be starring in Dumplin’ together, even though they didn’t have many scenes together at all – and he was just a bit upset about that too.
“It was great because we were all staying in the same hotel and we’d all get dinner and that kind of stuff. I was able to get close with everyone, except the one person who I actually knew before we started filming – Dove,” he told THR in a recent video interview.
Luke adds, “I didn’t even see her one time. It was insane. I missed Dove. I hadn’t seen her in like five years and we were in this same movie, and never even crossed paths.”
However, Luke did get to get super close with Danielle Macdonald, who he gushed over in the interview.
“She’s a movie star,” he shared about Danielle. “She’s not only crazy talented, she’s one of the dopest people. She had a phenomenal sense of humor and it was amazing [working with her].”
Lots of celebs keep a lot of momentos from their favorite sets – and Luke Benward is no different.
The 23-year-old actor, who stars as Bo in Dumplin’, revealed that he took one specific item from the set.
If you don’t know, Dumplin’ centers on a plus-size, teenage daughter (Danielle Macdonald) of a former beauty queen, who signs up for her mom’s pageant as a protest that escalates when other contestants follow in her footsteps, revolutionizing the pageant and their small Texas town.
During his Instagram Stories, Luke revealed the special item he took from the set, as he moved into his new home in Los Angeles.

Willowdean and Bo have an amazing connection in Netflix’s newest film, Dumplin’.
Danielle Macdonald is opening up about the couple and why their special relationship.
“I’m glad I did it. I think girls need to see that she drove herself crazy about that, because that’s her insecurity,” she told Elle about Will’s freak out after her kiss with Bo, played by Luke Benward.
“That’s something that she needs to learn to be okay with as well—he wouldn’t be touching her if he didn’t want to.”
Danielle adds that Bo isn’t “meant to represent the hottest guy that’s super popular. He’s not a star football player. It’s not about that at all. He’s just a guy at her work who actually has his own life and his own challenges. He just happened to find someone that is real and who he connects with, so why wouldn’t he like her?”
“She sees him as this amazing guy, but he also sees her as this also powerful, beautiful girl,” she says. “That’s the point. We shouldn’t be looking at this and being like, how could I get involved with this guy? I think that’s more the point of it—that there doesn’t have to be a barrier, and it also doesn’t matter what other people think, because they’re both into it. I think that’s pretty special.”
Luke Benward is officially the internet’s new boyfriend and no one can convince us otherwise about that.
After charming his way into everyone’s hearts as Bo Larson in Dumplin’ this weekend, JJJ put together five facts about the super tall (6’2″!) 23-year-old actor that you might’ve forgotten about.
We all know that Luke was once a Disney star (MinuteMen, Good Luck Charlie, and Girl vs. Monster are among his credits), but there are a few facts about Luke that you need to know – other than his birthday (May 12th, btw).
