Millicent Simmonds To Lead Freeform's 'Close Up' Pilot

Millicent Simmonds is set to star in Freeform’s new pilot, Close Up.

Deadline reports that the 16-year-old actress will star as Jen in the series and will communicate on screen in American Sign Language.

Close Up is set in a seemingly normal suburban town in Centreville, New Jersey, and follows high school student Rachel Guyer, who is on a mission to expose the truth about her hometown and turn her community inside out.

Millicent‘s role as Jen is described as “self-possessed and funny and tends to retreat into a rich imaginative inner world. Due to her impaired hearing, she is a natural observer and knows her town like the back of her hand. One to normally avoid attention at all costs, she takes a courageous step forward in the aftermath of a recent trauma.”

Millicent Simmonds Stands By Disney For Choosing Not To Use Subtitles To Translate ASL on 'Andi Mack'

Millicent Simmonds Stands By Disney For Choosing Not To Use Subtitles To Translate ASL on 'Andi Mack'

In the next new episodes of Andi Mack, Millicent Simmonds will be recurring on the show as Libby, Jonah’s new girlfriend.

The episodes will focus on how Libby and Andi (Peyton Elizabeth Lee) get along after both of them have dated Jonah (Asher Angel), and a lot on how ASL plays a big part in communication.

While Jonah keeps texting to communicate with Libby, Andi does not and learns some phrases to talk with Libby.

Andi Mack made the decision to not show subtitles to translate and there’s an important reason for that: “We wanted [Millicent’s] dialogue to be like any other dialogue on the show, and we knew that subtitles would defeat the purpose of the message her character portrays,” show creator Terri Minsky told Teen Vogue.

And it’s a decision Millicent stands behind.

“[Subtitles] would be distracting from the relationships that were taking place and forming,” she shared. “It’s also more fun for kids to watch it and try to understand the sign language. I think that it could be easily understood by them if they put the pieces together.”

Millicent added, “American Sign Language is a language. It’s fun to learn, and it’s different from other languages because you use your hands, you use your face, your facial expressions, and there is also an incredible culture that comes with it and an amazing community too, and through that, we can support each other.”

Andi Mack airs Fridays @ 8PM ET/PT on Disney Channel.

Millicent Simmonds is coming to Andi Mack!

The 14-year-old Quiet Place actress will be back on the show (she popped up as an extra in the first season) as Libby, Jonah’s new girlfriend.

In the clip below, you’ll see that there are no captions revealing what Millie, nor Jonah and Andi are signing – and you won’t see any in the episode at all.

Creator Terri Minsky and executive producer Michelle Manning, who also directed the episode, hoped this would authentically engage audiences with Libby’s way of communicating.

The new episode will also see Buffy is elated when a talented player joins the girls’ basketball team; and Cyrus continues to avoid T.J.

Tune into Andi Mack THIS FRIDAY, November 20th @ 8PM ET/PT on Disney Channel.
