'Riverdale' EP Talks 'Brutal' Luke Perry Tribute Episode

'Riverdale' EP Talks 'Brutal' Luke Perry Tribute Episode

The premiere of season four of Riverdale is right around the corner, and it’s going to be “brutal.”

The episode will pay tribute to the death of beloved cast member Luke Perry, who played Fred Andrews.

“When Luke passed, we very quickly made the decision that we weren’t going to address it [at the end of season three],” executive producer Roberto Aguirre-Sacasa told TVLine. “We didn’t want to rush it. We didn’t want to sandwich it in between all the other plotlines.” Even finishing off last season with a brief acknowledgement “felt a little cheap. So we thought, ‘Let’s just hold it, so we can think about it over the hiatus and reflect on it.’”

The upcoming full episode addressing Luke Perry‘s passing was “absolutely the right decision,” Roberto said. “It kind of allowed us to absorb what happened, and really think about what kind of story we wanted to tell.”

It will draw inspiration from the Friday Night Lights episode “The Son,” which is about the death of quarterback Matt Saracen’s father: “We kind of wanted to just tell a very grounded, truthful story.”

“We kind of knew this was going to be brutal on the cast, especially KJ [Apa], who was Luke’s main scene partner,” Roberto added. “[But] everyone was really proud to gather to tell this tribute to Fred, and to Luke. When it happened, we were all kind of scattered. So there was something really special when we gathered to do the table read that was cathartic. You know, shows are families. But we knew it was going to be hard, and it was.”

Season four of Riverdale premieres on October 9 on The CW at 8/7c.

Cole Sprouse is getting ready for a very new Jughead!

The 26-year-old star revealed that his iconic Riverdale character is headed for some major changes in Season 4 during the show’s Comic-Con panel on Sunday (July 21) in San Diego, Calif.

“Jughead gets whisked away on a scholarship to a very, sort of, Gossip Girl, Upper East Side, preppy, pretentious, richy-rich, silver spoon [school,] and he’s going to be the new blood,” Cole shared. “But yeah, I think it’s fun. And the school also kind of serves — I assume, maybe I’m just speaking out of turn here — but it serves as the setting for the flash-forward.”

Riverdale creator Roberto Aguirre-Sacasa also chimed in with some details about Jughead’s future.

“Yeah,” Roberto agreed. “One of the biggest mysteries of the season is kind of centered around Jughead at the new school, which is also going to be a big rival school for Riverdale High. So Archie and the Bulldogs will be having a football game against the Stonewall Stags.”

Showrunner Roberto Aguirre-Sacasa announced that season four will kick off with a tribute episode to Luke and his character Fred Andrews.

Luke‘s last appearance on Riverdale aired back in April and the absence of his character has not been addressed on screen yet.

Luke passed away in March after suffering a stroke.

'Riverdale' Showrunner Warns Fans to Be Worried About Jughead Next Season

'Riverdale' Showrunner Warns Fans to Be Worried About Jughead Next Season

No one will be safe in Riverdale‘s fourth season!

Showrunner Roberto Aguirre-Sacasa just teased that the show’s Core Four (Archie, Betty, Veronica, and Jughead) will go through some major turmoil next season – and he says fans should be especially concerned for Jughead (played by Cole Sprouse).

Fans were already worried about Jughead thanks to a flash-forward in Riverdale‘s season finale that featured the group burning the character’s iconic hat and saying they won’t be friends anymore.

When Us Weekly asked Roberto if the moment meant fans should worry about the beloved character, he was quick to say that it means exactly that.

“You know, I would be,” he said. “I think of all the murders and stuff that’s happened in our town, blessedly our core four have been spared the worst of it. It also felt like in this last go-around, again we would put them at the very center of the mystery.”

Riverdale returns for its fourth season in the fall on The CW.
