Vincent Zhou Lands 5 Quads, Places 6th at 2018 Winter Olympics

Vincent Zhou got really emotional after his free skate program on Sunday (February 17) at the 2018 PyeongChang Winter Olympics.

The 17-year-old figure skater, who is the youngest member of Team USA, slipped on one jump, but landed five quads and scored his personal best with 192.16.

Vincent placed 6th after his free skate, while teammates Nathan Chen and Adam Rippon placed 5th and 10th, respectively.

“These are memories that I will think back on many decades later and smile an old, withered smile complete with knowledge that I made the most of my life, especially as a 17 year old Olympian,” Vincent wrote on Instagram. “I placed 6th among the best skaters in the history of this sport and I am so very proud to do so representing the USA. My place is here and my time is now.”

Figure Skater Vincent Zhou Is Planning 5 Quads At the Winter Olympics 2018

Figure Skater Vincent Zhou Is Planning 5 Quads At the Winter Olympics 2018

Vincent Zhou will be making his Olympic debut tonight with the Men’s figure skating short program in Pyeongchang, South Korea.

The 17-year-old figure skater — who is actually the youngest Olympian from Team USA — is actually planning five quads for his free skate this week.

“Not many people are doing five quads right now,” Vincent shared in a recent teleconference. “It’s something that not really that many people are able to do. To do five quads cleanly, and I’m one of those people trying to figure it out and be ambitious and work on it.

“It’s all a process, and I feel like I’m doing a great job of managing it.”

However, he knows his competition, saying that he’s probably not going to be on the podium with a medal.

“I don’t like to focus on what other people do. I’m just gonna try my best to skate the way I train. Who knows? There might be a miracle. I might end up on the podium. It’s going to be best to not think about the big picture – just take it one element at a time,” Vincent added.

Even if he does or doesn’t get a medal, Vincent‘s Olympic career isn’t over with Pyeongchang.

“The Olympics is something truly special. I hope I’ll get to enjoy more than one,” he shared. “I’m just gonna try and take it day by day. Try and enjoy myself while there, meet some great athletes from all over the world, watch some other sports, and have a great time while I’m there.”

The Men’s short program kicks off @ 8PM ET/PT on NBC tonight.

Get used to seeing Nathan Chen‘s name everywhere.

The 17-year-old figure skater just shattered records everywhere last night (January 20) at the 2017 U.S. Figure Skating Championships — including the high score for the short dance at nationals. He scored 106.39, demolishing Jeremy Abbott‘s score of 99.86 back in 2014.

“Throughout my skating career, nerves have always been there,” Nathan revealed about his nerves going into the performance. “It’s something that I’ve just tried to distract myself from and push that aside as much as I can.”

He adds, “At the same time, where I am now and where I’m pushing to go is what I’ve strived towards my whole life, and I don’t feel like that’s something I should be afraid of. It’s something that I’m really excited for, actually. It’ll bring more energy and more excitement to my skating versus pulling me down.”

Following Nathan on the leaderboard were Ross Miner, Just JaredVincent Zhou, Jason Brown (the 2016 champ), and Max Aaron.
