Jon M. Chu Steps Down As Director of 'Willow' Pilot Due To Pandemic Delays

Jon M. Chu Steps Down As Director of 'Willow' Pilot Due To Pandemic Delays

Jon M. Chu has revealed he will no longer direct the pilot of the upcoming Willow series.

The new Disney+ show is set as a sequel and picks up years after the events of the 80s film.

In a note shared to social media, the director opened up about his decision to step down as director due to scheduling delays amid the ongoing pandemic and lockdown rules.

“I’m heartbroken to let you all know that I unfortunately have to let you all know that I unfortunately have to step away from directing Willow,” he said. “With the production schedule moving due to continued lockdowns in the UK, and with a new baby coming this summer (surprise!), the timing is just not going to work for me and my family.”

“As you may know, Willow has been one of my favorite movies since I was a child, so I’m devastated that I won’t be able to work with some of my heroes old and new like Kathy, Ron, Jon, Wendy, Michelle, and the amazing cast and crew they’ve put together,” Jon continued. “Like a kid seeing Willow for the time in the ’80s, I will look forward to watching this magical world unfold as a very enthusiastic fan. And boy do they have an adventure in store for you! I can’t wait for you all to experience it soon.”

Jon was attached to direct the pilot, and serve as an executive producer.

The upcoming Disney+ series based on the movie Willow just got three new stars!

It was just announced that The Craft: Legacy‘s Cailee Spaeny, Erin Kellyman and Ellie Bamber will star in the new Lucasfilm show, Deadline reports.

The three ladies join the film’s original star Warwick Davis, who will reprise his role for the series, which takes place years after the events of the original film. It will introduce all-new characters to the enchanted realm of fairy queens and two-headed Eborsisk monsters, and welcomes back its namesake hero, Willow Ufgood (Davis).

This will be the second time that Erin has worked with Lucasfilm, as she appeared in Solo: A Star Wars Story. It also reunites Erin and Ellie, who both starred in the Les Misérables mini-series on BBC One last year.

Jon M. Chu is set to direct the pilot and executive produce the series.

Disney+ is resurrecting the world of Willow!

The streaming service announced it’s plans for a TV series based off George Lucas‘ 1988 film, which is an epic fantasy adventure set in an age of swords, sorcery, myths and monsters.

The TV series spinoff is the first non-Star Wars entity since 2015 and it will take place years after the original, with the movie’s original star Warwick Davis (pictured here) reprising his role!

“So many fans have asked me over the years if Willow will make a return, and now I’m thrilled to tell them that he will indeed,” Warwick said in a statement. “Many have told me they grew up with Willow and that the film has influenced how they view heroism in our own world. If Willow Ufgood can represent the heroic potential in all of us, then he is a character I am extremely honored to reprise.”

The director of the original film, Ron Howard, also shared a statement about the new TV series. He will also executive produce the show.

“It’s creatively exciting to not only revisit the world and characters first conceived by George Lucas, Bob Dolman and myself but to see it take flight in such fresh, fun and cinematic ways through the imagination of Jon Kasdan and Team Willow,” Ron shared. “This isn’t a nostalgic throw-back, it’s a creative lean-forward and it’s a blast to be a part of it all.”

Jon M Chu will direct the pilot, written by Jonathan Kasdan, who will also serve as co-showrunner with Wendy Mericle. The trio will also serve as an executive producers on the series, which will begin production in 2021.

The original Willow movie is currently available to stream on Disney+!
