Meghan Trainor is sharing the full story behind her new single “No” with Fabulous mag.
In the new issue of the glossy, the 22-year-old singer also dished on her body image and crying after she won her Best New Artist Grammy. Check it:
On her recent Grammy win: “It feels so unreal, as though I’m watching a movie. I have ‘pinch me’ moments every day: singing with Lionel Richie – I’m like: ‘Why am I here?’ – meeting my idols, or being interviewed for the cover of Fabulous magazine. Me? The cover? When they called my name, I didn’t believe it at all. Then my dad set me off crying. Throughout my whole career, either as a songwriter or artist, I’d ask him: ‘Did I make it yet, Dad?'”
On how her single “No” was born: “I was pissed off with LA Reid [her boss]. I love him so much, but after I gave him the new album, he sat me down and told me I didn’t have a single. I said: ‘Yes I do! I have nine singles.’ He said: ‘But you don’t have a bullet yet.’ So I went into the studio and said: ‘I’m pissedd off, I want a big angry song!’ And it turned into a girl power anthem. I wrote it in one sitting and when I took it back to LA Reid, he played it 29 times that night.”
On being happy with her body image: “I didn’t set out to be at the forefront of this ‘campaign’, but if it’s working, I’ll do it. It’s a big responsibility. But the feedback I get from fans who used to hate their bodies or feel so insecure that they didn’t leave the house makes it totally worthwhile.”
