'Pretty Little Liars' Showrunner Defended Spoby's Ending Because Some Fans Weren't Happy

In the finale episode of Pretty Little Liars, Spencer Hastings was the only Liar without a ring on her finger and some Spoby fans weren’t happy about it.

However, Troian Bellisario was (see here for reference), and just recently, showrunner I. Marlene King had to defend Spencer’s ending again on social media.

Speaking with EW around the time of the finale, Marlene shared that Spoby definitely was endgame even if they weren’t together at that moment.

“Yes [they will be together]. I hope fans got that…we literally did say, could we have a double wedding? Or should we have a triple wedding? That felt like it was a little too much. But I think they got their happy ending.”

Marlene also had a conversation on Twitter to reveal why their ending was the way it was.

“But really, given the story, it would have been false and rushed. Spoby is together but they needed some time and breath. That’s my truth,” she posted. “And to Spoby fans, watch the scene where Toby knows Spencer from Alex. I hope in time u realize the epic love and romance in that moment.”

“It never occurred to me that Spoby fans would not be happy with the finale,” Marlene added on Instagram this week. “That moment when Toby knew in his heart who the real Spencer was… for me it was a huge romantic moment. Worthy of an epic love story. For me it was understood…. Spoby was and is end game.”
