The series is about a “Jewish family separated at the start of WWI yet determined to reunite,” with eight episodes planned.
Erica Lipez is set to write and executive produce, with Thomas Kail directing and executive producing.
“I’ll never forget the day, at fifteen years old, I learned that I came from a family of Holocaust survivors,” Georgia Hunter shared in a statement. “It was a discovery that changed my life, inspiring a decade-long journey to unearth and record my family’s story. When We Were the Lucky Ones landed in my dear friend Tommy Kail’s hands, I knew it had found its home. I couldn’t be more excited to partner with him, with our incredible show runner, Erica Lipez, and with the amazing teams at Old 320, 20th and Hulu as we bring the story of my ancestors—and through it, the story of the Holocaust—to the screen.”
If you didn’t know, this will mark Joey‘s third limited series, following The Act, also on Hulu, and the upcoming A Spark of Light, based on the novel by Jodi Picoult.
Joey also has TWO first look deals, one with Hulu and one with Netflix, to develop and produce upcoming projects. For Hulu, she will develop series, and for Netflix, she’ll develop films.
In addition, she has two movies coming this summer – Hulu’s The Princess and Sony’s Bullet Train, plus the upcoming Uglies adaptation for Netflix, which doesn’t yet have a release date.
