Gurinder Chadha Dishes on Writing New Indian Princess Movie Musical for Disney

An Indian princess movie is in the works for Disney!

Director and writer Gurinder Chadha is working on the screenplay for the upcoming live-action musical project.

If you don’t know, Gurinder is the writer and director of Angus, Thongs and Perfect Snogging and Bend it Like Beckham, among other films.

While appearing at a screening of Bend it Like Beckham, which turned 20 years old this year, the filmmaker opened up about working on the upcoming Disney princess movie.

See what she said…

“Let me tell you, it’s not easy writing a Disney princess movie,” she told Deadline at the Red Sea International Film Festival.

“It’s a very hard thing to do because there are certain rules you have to follow and you also don’t want to repeat yourself. I don’t want to make Mulan again for example, I want to do my own thing,” she added. “But at the same time there are very strong Disney princesses out there so to do something different but still within the genre, it’s an interesting balance to explore as a creator.”

Gurinder is writing the script with her husband, Paul Mayeda Berges, who is also her writing partner, and will also produce with Lindy Goldstein with Disney’s VP of production Jessica Virtue.

“Together all of us are really shaping this story which, I hope once we’ve got to a good stage, we’re ready to share,” Gurinder shared.

She also said that when Walt Disney Studios Motion Picture Production President Sean Bailey approached her about the project, she said, “Hell yeah! That’s me!”

If you didn’t know, there’s currently a Disney+ series adaptation in the works that will have an Indian princess lead.
