“I’m queer. I’ve identified as bisexual since a teenager,” he told the outlet, adding that he’s always had an “underlying curiosity” about men.

“I got bullied a lot by other boys [growing up], and I just felt like my soul was slowly being taken from me,” he continued. “I ended up eating lunch in my biology classroom in 10th grade, and I had no one to talk to. You form a shell around yourself for protection. And you start to make decisions based off of things outside of what you want and who you are. I stopped doing so many of the things that I loved doing because it felt safer. That right there is the outcome of oppression. When you literally have to mute who you are in order to feel safe. That’s soul-crushing.”

Tyler Blackburn Wasn't Prepared For How Quickly Fans Took To 'Malex' on 'Roswell, New Mexico'

Tyler Blackburn Wasn't Prepared For How Quickly Fans Took To 'Malex' on 'Roswell, New Mexico'

Tyler Blackburn is opening up about Malex more after this week’s flashback episode of Roswell, New Mexico.

In new interviews with Bustle and EW, the 32-year-old star dished about the importance of the relationship and what fans can look forward to with the couple.

“I just didn’t know that the ‘ship … was going to be quite so big,” Tyler shared. “It normalizes a gay relationship in a way that is very necessary and the response to it being as good that it is just really warms my heart because it makes me realize there is growth happening — you know? Especially in younger audiences.”

He continues, opening up about how Alex would deal with knowing the truth about Michael, “I feel like Michael’s being cautious. I think Alex has really given him the runaround up until this point.”

“I don’t think the Michael would have as big of an issue as one might think in telling Alex, I think he just needs to fully trust him first,” Tyler says. “Because he loves him so much, I think he’d be more willing to be open up. Alex isn’t left completely in the dark for the whole season. You’ll have to watch to see how that unfolds and how that changes the relationship.

Roswell, New Mexico airs Tuesdays on The CW.
