Yara Shahidi's CFDA Awards Hair Was Inspired By Diana Ross
Yara Shahidi rocked quite the updo at the 2019 CFDA Fashion Awards on Monday (June 3) and her hairstylist is opening up about the look.
The grown-ish actress’ look was inspired by Diana Ross‘ character in the movie Mahogany.
“Instead of just pulling it back into a ponytail, I incorporated braids to make it more modern,” hairstylist Nikki Nelm‘s told Vogue.
To get the look, Nikki cornrowed Yara‘s lengths back vertically, wove delicate micro-braids around wire, then molded them into abstract, gravity-defying shapes.
If you didn’t know, Yara has a special connection to Diana Ross. She plays the daughter of Tracee Ellis Ross on Black-ish, and Tracee‘s real life mom is Diana!
