Olympian Gabby Douglas: 'My Hair Doesn't Matter'

Gabby Douglas performs her routine during the Artistic Gymnastics Women’s Uneven Bars final on Day 10 of the London 2012 Olympic Games at North Greenwich Arena on Monday (August 6) in London.

The 16-year-old gymnast has sounded off about the criticism of her hair during competition.

“I don’t know where this is coming from. What’s wrong with my hair? I’m like, ‘I just made history and people are focused on my hair?’ It can be bald or short; it doesn’t matter about (my) hair,” Gabby told AP.

She added, “I’m going to wear my hair like this during beam and bar finals. You might as well just stop talking about it. I don’t think people should be worried about that. We’re all champions and we’re all winners. I just say that it’s kind of a stupid and crazy thought to think about my hair.”

During the competition, Gabby placed 8th.

Totally agree I had not even noticed her hair until this came up. Just be proud of this amazing young girl who will do even greater things in the future.

Its doubtful that the comments made by African American women are void of some of their own personal insecurities and strife when regarding the rejection of their own natural looks. The desire to be polished has caused some people to aspire to ‘white standards’ of beauty while this young athlete has rejected all concern for conformity, and instead had embraced her unrefined African hair to focus on what is important. What is equally beguiling is why the question of this athlete’s looks even entered the equation.

Serious people? The girl just won the title of the best gymnast in the world and you complain about her hair? What has the world come to?! I think her hair is perfectly fine!
