'The Vampire Diaries' Recap: Damon & Elena are Tested in 'True Lies'

SPOILER ALERT: DO NOT CONTINUE IF YOU DON’T WANT TO KNOW WHAT HAPPENED!

Major secrets and lies were revealed during tonight’s maddening episode of The Vampire Diaries!

Damon (Ian Somerhalder) has been trying to protect Elena (Nina Dobrev) by keeping things from her, but it all comes to a head when Silas (Paul Wesley) lets the cat out of the bag. She also finds out (the hard way) that her missing ex-boyfriend has a doppelganger.

Meanwhile, Matt (Zach Roerig) and Jeremy (Steven R. McQueen) team up to keep Katherine (Dobrev) in check, and even more mystery emerges around Whitmore College.

Jeremy and Matt find Katherine and drive her out of town to escape Silas, at the request of Damon. She’s a mess and sick for the first time in her life, so she’s not exactly cooperative. Silas eventually finds them and realizes he can’t read Matt’s thoughts because someone else is in there. (We know that it’s Nadia from last week’s episode.) So, he breaks his neck and Matt visits “the other side” where he sees Bonnie (Kat Graham) and realizes that she’s dead. He eventually comes back to life with the help of his trusty ring with no memory of it.

Stefan hallucinates that he’s with Elena to help with his continued suffering. Back at school, she can’t seem to shake the feeling that she needs to help him, as Damon enlists the help of Sheriff Forbes. Silas pretends to be his underwater doppelganger to fool Elena and get the location of Katherine. She falls for it and he basically compels her to kill Damon. He also spills every one of Damon’s secrets (Katherine, Jeremy’s expulsion, etc). The only thing that saves her from staking her own boyfriend is the thought of his brother. Awkward! Damon says he’s OK with it and even gives her Stefan’s ring. They promise to find him together.

Meanwhile, Jeremy deals with babysitting Katherine until Silas, of course, finds them in the woods. Jeremy reminds him that he’s a hunter and much stronger, and they go at it until Katherine shoots Silas. Even though he can’t be killed, it buys them some time – and proves Katherine still has a heart somewhere in there.

Caroline (Candice Accola) and Elena find out that one of the professors, Dr. Wesley Maxfield (Rick Cosnett), signed off on Megan’s death certificate, which means he was part of the vampire cover-up. They try to enroll in his class to gain more info, but that doesn’t go as planned. The hot new guy Jesse (Kendrick Sampson) tells them that he’s rumored to be part of some secret society that will probably make more sense later. He and Caroline share a moment together and it looks like she’s getting over Tyler already. Meanwhile, Dr. Maxfield expresses his admiration for Elena’s father. (Huh?)

Silas stops by a local gas station and is confronted by “travelers” (or gypsies) who are out to kill him, one of whom is Nadia. But she goes rogue and kills her friend for some reason. It seems Silas has a new ally…

In the end, Sheriff Forbes shows Elena and Damon to Stefan’s safe, which washed ashore somehow. Inside is a body drained of blood. So where did Stefan go and how did he get out?!?
