Zayn Malik Admits He Wanted to Leave One Direction in the First Year - Watch Now

Zayn Malik gave his first broadcast interview alone in an appearance that will air on Thursday (January 28) on Beats 1.

The 23-year-old former One Direction member spoke to Zane Lowe about why he left the group and how his band mates reacted.

“I think I always kind of wanted to go, from the first year, really,” Zayn said. “I never really wanted to be there in the band, I just gave it a go because it was there at the time.”

Zayn added, “I think the boys kind of knew – in terms of the music – that wasn’t my cup of tea… They obviously didn’t want me to leave, but they couldn’t talk me out of it at that point. I’d already made my mind up.”
