Figure Skater Gracie Gold Left Off World Team Roster; Thinks She Should Be On It

We won’t be seeing Gracie Gold‘s face in any of the world figure skating competitions this season.

After placing 6th at the 2017 U.S. Figure Skating Championships this weekend, Gracie has been picked as the 2nd alternate on both the Worlds and Four Continents teams, behind 4th place finisher Mirai Nagasu.

New ladies’ champ Karen Chen, Ashley Wagner and Mariah Bell will rep the US at both competitions.

“Obviously I had a very terrible long program and I didn’t place very well and I got a low score,” Gracie said after her long program.

“It’s just something about this year, I’ve been in a funk. I’m glad this is not the Olympic year.”

However, she still thinks she should be on the world team roster.

“Even though today’s skating was subpar, there’s not a doubt in my mind that this has been a rough season, but that I’m still pretty much one of the best skaters in the United States and in the world. … All I know is that, given the opportunity, I wouldn’t let them down and I think that I would be a very wise pick for the world team.”

WHAT DO YOU THINK? Should Gracie be on the world teams?

JJJ Update: Gracie has just split with her longtime coach, Frank Carroll. He was also the coach for Michelle Kwan, Evan Lysacek, Mirai Nagasu and currently coaches 2014 Mens’ Bronze Medalist Denis Ten.

No, she should not be on it. It would be a terrible thing to do to Mariah Bell. Mariah came in third and she should have the spot at Worlds. If the situation were reversed, you can be sure she would not feel the same way.

Sadly, Gracie did not earn her spot on the team at all. She had a very poor season and would be a big risk for the US to put her on the team. The US needs to keep three spots for ladies for the Olympics next year, and Gracie’s track record would put the three spots at risk if she has another meltdown at Worlds. Poor thing. She may think she’s one of the best skaters, but mental toughness was never her strong point. She has fooled herself into thinking she would be a “wise choice” for the US team, when in fact she’d be a foolish choice. Mariah Bell earned her spot and did very well at Skate America, winning a silver medal. Gold never even medaled at anything this season. Hopefully she will regroup and come back stronger, but it will take a special coach to work her out of her depression and funk. Frank Carroll wasn’t able to do it, so that’s why he felt it best to part ways with her, according to articles I’ve read.

Gracie is a mess and needs some serious therapy to deal with her issues. She thinks she should be on the world team despite the disaster of this year? This girl is sick. Mentally ill. She needs help. Someone please help her.

IMO Gold could have been thinking that with Bell & Chen’s inexperience at worlds, the three spots she helped team USA secure would be in danger. But she has not had one successful competition all year and her sentiment would likely back fire. Last Olympics when Wagner got chosen over Nagasu, the case was different in that it was just 1 bad night…..not indicative of an entire season of successful competitions. Gold needs to be more concerned in making a comeback. Since she did not finish in the top 5 she doesn’t get automatic qualification requirement to enter Nationals next year.. My advice to Gold is take that attitude and let it fuel you all the way to Olympic gold.
