'Shadowhunters' Showrunner Responds to Controversial #Malec Consent Scene
Shadowhunters fans had a lot to say about a sex scene between fan-favorite couple Magnus (Harry Shum Jr.) and Alec (Matthew Daddario).
During the latest episode, Magnus tells Alec that he feels vulnerable just before they get intimate. Alec then kisses him and pushes him off screen, implying that they do indeed have sex.
But for a lot of fans, consent from Magnus wasn’t given – or if anything, portrayed clear enough.
Showrunner Darren Swimmer took to social media to acknowledge fans’ concerns and thank them for bringing it to his attention.
“We thought it was a given that Alec wouldn’t have forced anything, but a fair point that we could have made consensus more clear onscreen,” he tweeted. “Consent: a big issue. Thank you for sharing your pov on this topic.”
