Auli'i Cravalho Gets Major Nerves Before Every Interview

Auli’i Cravalho is more like all of us than we realize.

During a recent chat with Teen Vogue, the 17-year-old Rise actress admitted that she always gets nervous before all her interviews!

“I always have stage fright,” Auli’i shared. “I’m scared and nervous before every interview, literally as I’m talking to you I had serious nerves before this interview.”

She continues, “I love what I do so so much that often times, I just get so nervous for it ’cause I want it to be done so well.”

Looking back at filming the pilot episode of Rise, Auli’i remembers just how nervous she was to shoot it.

“A lot of scenes with Damon J. Gillespie [who plays Robbie] and Lilette, when they have that really kind of cute and fun and nervous dynamic between the two of them, I had a lot of those same nerves of being, ‘okay, just remember all of my lines’ and ‘I need to act cute’ and then ‘oh my gosh, I’m outside and there’s a lot of wind blowing around and my hair is in my face. How do I make this look cute?’”

However, the nervousness in Auli’i and in her character, Lilette, pays off – because they’re both following a passion.

“Throughout the entire first episode, you get to see Lilette come out of her shell and at the very tail end of the episode when she sings ‘Mama Who Bore Me,’ this is her own Spring Awakening of realizing that she might be an introvert, she might be someone who didn’t pine for the spotlight, but once she’s there, she does have this incredible light and she enjoys it so much,” she says.

“She’s ready to work at it as a passion.”

Rise airs Tuesday nights on NBC.
