5 Seconds of Summer Talk How Their Break Between Albums Helped Them Make 'Youngblood'

5 Seconds of Summer stop by The Elvis Duran Z100 Morning Show ahead of their concert later on in New York City on Friday (June 15).

The guys – Luke Hemmings, Calum Hood, Michael Clifford and Ashton Irwin – recently opened up about the decision to take a break from the band and how it helped them with Youngblood.

“I think mentally we were all a bit burned out after working for four years straight,” Calum shared. “We were surrounded by noise for four years, and we came off that tour and had four months off, and for the first time ever it was just silent. We were thrown out in LA and told, ‘all right, go and build your lives again’. So at that time we were all very lost.”

He adds, “It was hard to rebuild your personal life from the ground up. What drove the new album lyrically and sonically, is us regathering and rediscovering who we were as individuals, but also who 5 Seconds of Summer are and what message we wanted to portray.”

Having that break though, helped them come back with an amazing new album.

“It feels like it’s exactly who we are,” Luke says. “A band we’re comfortable with in our twenties.”
