During the event, Emma opened up about her character Polaris and how the show won’t just brush her mental illness under a rug.
The character, a mutant capable of manipulating metal, was later revealed to be Magneto’s daughter and to have inherited his history of mental illness, suffering recurring mental breakdowns throughout her stories.
“We definitely don’t tiptoe around that,” Emma shared (via EW). “She’s untreated, she’s unmedicated . You will see her have very, very high highs of manic behavior and very low lows of depression, of crippling depression.
She adds that the show is handling it with respect.
“Something we’re treating respectfully is she’s not just ‘the crazy girl,’” she says. “Through her history, a lot of people have [called her] the crazy girlfriend. We’re showing her the respect that I think she deserves and take her seriously.”
Premiering TONIGHT on Fox, the series (part of the X-Men Universe) centers on the Strucker family, whose ordinary lives are rocked by the sudden discovery that their teenage children possess mutant powers.
Forced to go on the run from a hostile government, the family seeks help from an underground network of mutants and must fight to survive.

The 20-year-old actress opened up about her NBC show, Aquarius, fashion in the ’60s and more. Check it:
“So often, I got the script and said to myself [about character Emma], ‘stupid girl, go back to your handmade dresses and your mansion. Go back to your beautiful mother who loves you. You dumb girl’,” she shared. “But it was a different time in America.”
Emma added, “I felt like I had to catch on to what happened to these girls. And so, my research consisted of books and films mainly, and I took note of how they [women] acted and how they were understood, and how they presented themselves. That was super interesting to me, because there was such a vast difference. Even the way women spoke was distinct. So, I have a very different voice that I use for Emma. I reminded myself that it was the 60s and women didn’t really have as much of a role in…well, life.”
