Ian Somerhalder is opening up about playing Damon Salvatore for eight years.
The Vampire Diaries star loved the character’s first season arc, in particular.
“For me, season one was just the pinnacle for Damon. That was the apex of the ability of this character to shine through story,” Ian told EW. “I loved a lot of that stuff. That stuff was really fun. All the stuff with Damon and Vicki, the dancing in the Salvatore house.”
“In season two, Damon sort of struggles to recognize who he is and he misses being human — there were some great scenes that came out of that,” Ian continued. “But I loved that season 1 stuff: The struggle of Damon to find his love only to learn the naiveté of love and that he was duped and that he’s not as good as his brother in the eyes of a woman that he fancied. So those types of struggles, they were real. But there has been an amazing string of very well written scenes throughout these periods of time. 170 episodes, that’s crazy. That’s a lot.”
He added, “Damon has had a very fun time for a very long time. Damon’s had a great run. He’s had a lot of great lines, he’s had a lot of great scenes, there’s been a lot to do, and I learned a lot. I learned a great deal playing this character and navigating the waters of being on a big global hit network series.”
The Vampire Diaries series finale airs Friday, March 10 on The CW.

Ian Somerhalder‘s wife Nikki Reed and ex-girlfriend Nina Dobrev bonded over their first-ever dinner together this past week.
He posted an Instagram photo of the three of them, which was also shared by Nikki and Nina, to shoot down rumors that they didn’t get along.
“Chilling with these two… After years of websites pretending these two badass ladies knew each other well and baseless, false information of back stabbing and hatred from low-brow websites filled the minds and hearts of fans,” Ian wrote. “They finally were able to get together for their first real dinner. Let’s stop spreading hate everyone, there’s already too much of that right now in our world. Join in on the love. Only love here- always has been always will be. Media companies preying on the passion from vulnerable and or impressionable minds of fans to sell advertising through click-though traffic is a disease in our society. It’s poisonous.”
He added, “Let’s finish this series with respect and kindness and continue that in our lives. I think it’s time. What do think?”
Nina and Ian called it quits back in May 2013, two years before he married Nikki in May 2015.
Nina Dobrev and Nikki Reed are slamming rumors that they’ve been feuding.
The longtime friends found themselves at the center of intense rumors after Nikki got married to Nina‘s ex and former Vampire Diaries co-star, Ian Somerhalder.
Nikki took to her Instagram to finally dispel the gossip about the women’s relationship, revealing that there has never been any bad blood.
“For the last few years we thought addressing any baseless rumors with silence was the best way. Besides, who wants to respond to made up stories about ‘friends backstabbing friends,’ ‘cheating exes,’ or ‘cast members exiting shows,’” Nikki began.
She went on the say that she believes they have “a moral responsibility to young girls to end that narrative” and to not let them think that women hating other women is normal.
Nikki added, “So here’s to putting an end to all those fake stories of on set jealousy, betrayal, made-up-friendships lost & women hating women.”
Nina also spoke up on social media, simply writing, “Can’t believe how time flies. Farewell dinner with team Somereed! So good catching up with these goofballs. All <3″

Because let’s face it, at its core, this show was not about a love triangle, but about two brothers who became vampires in 1864.
Despite their (major) differences, Stefan (Paul Wesley) and Damon (Ian Somerhalder) always found themselves sacrificing their lives for the other.
So we gathered some of their best sibling moments from over the seasons.
Don’t forget – The Vampire Diaries airs Fridays @ 8PM on The CW.
