Rules of The Innocents' Shapeshifting Mythology

Rules of The Innocents' Shapeshifting Mythology

Netflix’s The Innocents focuses on British teen June (Sorcha Groundsell) and her secret boyfriend Harry (Percelle Ascott), who try to run away together on her 16th birthday, when they find out she has the strange power to shapeshift.

So how exactly does this shifting work? TV Guide sat down with producers to get the lowdown on the rules: (SPOILER ALERT – read at your own risk!)

- Shifters are female only (though they can shift into males).

- Shifting has an “emotional trigger.” “So one shifter’s trigger might be anger, one’s might be love, one’s might be fear,” creator and EP Hania Elkington explained. “And the way that that trigger is determined is what emotion is it that makes you shift for the first time.”

- Shifting starts at age 16.

- Shifts can only be sparked by human contact. When the shifter is in someone else’s form, the other person is basically in a coma until the shifter goes back to their own body.

- “Be careful what you’re wearing, ’cause you’re gonna be wearing those clothes afterwards,” creator and EP Simon Duric shared.

- The shifting gene usually skips generations, but there are exceptions. If a shifter inherits the gene from their mother, they gain enhanced abilities.

- Mirrors show a shifter’s true identity.

'The Innocents' Stars Sorcha Groundsell & Percelle Ascott Dish on June & Harry's Relationship

'The Innocents' Stars Sorcha Groundsell & Percelle Ascott Dish on June & Harry's Relationship

The key to Netflix’s brand new series, The Innocents, is Harry and June’s relationship.

Portrayed by Sorcha Groundsell and Percelle Ascott, the two actors opened up to Bustle about the great things about the relationship between the couple.

“Harry is the guy who would make the most noise in the room, but he’s actually the loneliest,” Percelle shared. “June helps him escape from himself, the Harry that’s in pain and has to take care of his family. June frees him from all of that.”

And since she helps him with that, he helps her with acceptance of her abilities.

“When June finds out she has this uncontrollable condition and has to accept who she is, Harry discovers that he has this ability to help her on this course of her journey of acceptance. They both give each other that sense of freedom and that’s the most special thing about their relationship.”

“It’s what we all want to find at that age, isn’t it?” Sorcha adds. “Two people finding each other and really being able to let go of any disguises they might be using to get through their young teenage life.”

She continues, “They can be very real with each other, which is something they can’t be with anyone else in their lives. That’s such a pure connection. But maintaining that relationship in the real world is going to be difficult.”

The Innocents is streaming on Netflix now.

Sorcha Groundsell & Percelle Ascott Reveal What Drew Them To 'The Innocents'

Sorcha Groundsell & Percelle Ascott Reveal What Drew Them To 'The Innocents'

Sorcha Groundsell and Percelle Ascott are starring in Netflix’s brand new series, The Innocents, and you’re going to be hooked.

The two actors recently spoke to Bustle about the show and the reasons they were drawn to it.

“I was really drawn to these young characters,” Percelle shared. “Sometimes it’s easy to not give young characters complexities they deserve and these characters have so many dimensions and layers to them. I became obsessed with the story and what happens towards the end.”

For Sorcha, she was drawn to the story, but also to the creatives behind the show, which just happened to be full of women.

“I certainly don’t think I’ve been on a set where there have been that many women at the center of the story,” she said. “It’s an inspiring time to be a young woman in the industry — times have really changed very drastically over the last year, and in a way our show is the natural result of these changes.”

Sorcha adds, “Tthe fact that it got made and company the size of Netflix wants to back it is a huge sign that not only have times changed but they’re continuing to change and there is an interest for these types of stories led by women.”

Sorcha Groundsell Says Her New Show 'The Innocents' Is 'Scary at Parts'

Sorcha Groundsell steps out for the screening of her new series, The Innocents, held at Curzon Mayfair on Monday night (August 20) in London, England.

The young actress was joined by co-stars Percelle Ascott and Guy Pearce at the premiere, as well as many friends.

“I definitely tapped into the slightly darker side of it, which is really what sets it apart,” Sorcha shared about the new series. “It was described to me initially as a mix between True Romance and the Swedish vampire film Let The Right One In, and I think that is weirdly accurate.”

She adds that the show is not just “one thing. It’s romance and characters who happen to be quite young, but it’s also very dark and very psychological, and scary at parts.”

The Innocents will debut on Netflix THIS Friday, August 24th.

The Innocents' Percelle Ascott Talks About His Chemistry With Sorcha Groundsell

Percelle Ascott stops by Build Series to chat about his new Netflix series, The Innocents, in New York City on Tuesday (August 14).

The 25-year-old charming actor opened up about how he got the part of Harry, and his chemistry tests with co-star Sorcha Groundsell.

“It’s very easy in teen romances to make the relationship seem perfect,” Percelle says. “But it’s still important to tell the complexities of what love is. Love is a heavy subject. I can’t remember how many people I auditioned with [for the part], but I remember the one I had with Sorcha.”

“It was instant, but also organic,” he added. “It wasn’t forced, it just was.”

Percelle also goes on to reveal how he and Sorcha didn’t have much time for bonding before starting to film the series.
