Freeform's 'The Bold Type' Could've Been An Entirely Different Show

The Bold Type makes it’s premiere this coming Tuesday on Freeform — but the show that we’re all prepared to watch and obviously, love, could’ve been so much different.

Creator Sarah Watson revealed in a new interview with The Wrap that the original concept for the series was about a man!

Seriously — the show was intended to center on Alex (who is played by Matt Ward), a former Wall Street Journal-esque reporter who can only find work at Scarlet, the fictional magazine inside the show.

“It was more of a ‘West Wing-y’, fish out of water type thing,” Sarah shared, adding that it was set to air on NBC as well.

However, the whole concept changed when NBC decided not to pursue it, and Freeform picked it up.

“[The move] allowed us to focus on the female friendships, which has just been the heart and soul of the show,” she added.

“We started talking about what it’s like to be in your mid 20s and your career struggles and your dreams and your hopes and just how intense your friendships are and how intense everybody is and it just really came alive in this meeting.”

The Bold Type premieres on Tuesday, July 11th on Freeform.
