Luca Guadagnino Gushes About Working with Zendaya on 'Challengers'

Luca Guadagnino is dishing on working with Zendaya!

The filmmaker, who directed her Dune co-star Timothee Chalamet in both Call Me By Your Name and Bones and All, recently directed the actress in the upcoming tennis film Challengers, which also stars West Side Story‘s Mike Faist.

During a new interview with fashion designer Jonathan Anderson for Interview magazine, the director opened up about working with the Euphoria star on their upcoming film.

“She is a remarkable filmmaker. She is a woman in command and at the same time, she is totally ready to become, to change, to be convinced to do something different. She’s super smart,” Luca said in the interview. “I truly admire Zendaya, but I truly admire my costume designer as well.”

Luca was referring to Jonathan Anderson as the costume designer, as he took on that behind-the-scenes role Challengers.

The upcoming drama filmed earlier this year near Boston, Mass., and follows Tashi (Zendaya), a tennis player turned coach, [who] has taken her husband, Art (Faist), and transformed him from a mediocre player into a world-famous grand slam champion.

To jolt him out of his recent losing streak, she makes him play a ‘Challenger’ event — close to the lowest level of tournament on the pro tour — where he finds himself standing across the net from the once-promising, now burnt-out Patrick: his former best friend and Tashi’s former boyfriend (played by Josh O’Connor).

After filming Challengers, Zendaya returned to film the upcoming Dune: Part Two, in which she has a bigger role in than the first movie.
