Meryl Davis & Charlie White Aren't Retired From Ice Dance At All

Meryl Davis & Charlie White Aren't Retired From Ice Dance At All

Meryl Davis and Charlie White might not be competing in the 2018 Pyeongchang Winter Olympics, but they’re definitely not retired.

The reigning Ice Dance Olympic champions won’t be competing in the upcoming games, but aren’t talking about retirement from the sport at all.

“We are not retired we are just not competing at the Olympics this year,” Charlie had to clarify in an early morning interview. “That’s as far as we are willing to go.”

He adds about feeling an itch to go back into competition, “So many of our best memories come from those experiences, but the moments we were at competitions and watching everyone … if we felt we should be out there or not, ultimately, and pretty much every time, we came down to the conclusion that coming back to competition was not the right thing.”

“I think we are really proud of the journey, as a whole,” Meryl shared. “Things didn’t always go perfectly, but I’m really proud of the way we were able to learn from our mistakes, pick ourselves back up and, ultimately, I think that’s a really big component that led us to the top of the Olympic podium.”

Meryl Davis & Charlie White Will Not Compete at 2018 Olympics

Meryl Davis & Charlie White Will Not Compete at 2018 Olympics

This makes our hearts break — Meryl Davis and Charlie White will not be competing at the 2018 Pyeongchang Winter Olympics next year.

The 2014 Ice Dance Olympic champions have made the decision not to return to the Olympic ice in South Korea next year and made the announcement this morning.

“I hate to be a little bit of a downer maybe for our fans, but we’ve decided not to compete at the Olympics,” Charlie shared on Today after skating at Rockefeller Center.

Meryl added, “It was one that took us three years to come up with. We gave ourselves a lot of time. With the ability to explore what we really felt, I think we’re really happy with that decision.”

While we’re sad they won’t be on the ice at the Olympics next year, they’re not completely saying goodbye.

This spring, Meryl and Charlie will be on the Stars on Ice tour.

Meryl Davis & Charlie White Discuss Their Return To Competition

Meryl Davis & Charlie White Discuss Their Return To Competition

Meryl Davis and Charlie White strike a skater’s pose during Airweave’s Road to Rio Olympic Countdown Event held in Times Square, New York City earlier this week.

Joined by Paralympic swimmer Jessica Long, Fencing Silver medalist Tim Morehouse, and Project Runway‘s Tim Gunn, the group toasted the Summer Olympic hopefuls.

Speaking with NBC recently, Meryl and Charlie opened up again about returning to competition.

“We would probably want to decide at some point during the [2016-17] season, so that we can be basically competitively ready, even if it’s halfway through the season or towards the end of the season,” Charlie shared. “Whether we get to any competitions doesn’t, I think, make as big of a difference. As long as we could have been competing. I would say that would probably make the most sense.”

He continued, “Whether we come back or not, it’s unrelated to what is definitely a very strong dance field. Whether it’s strong or weak, having accomplished what we’ve accomplished and our relationship with the sport, it’s about whether we feel fulfilled with what we’ve accomplished. We’re still figuring that out.”

Meryl added, “[Shows are] different enough that we would definitely need a lot of preparation to get back into competition mode. Despite a lot of preparation that would be needed, we’re still on the ice almost every day and still in fighting shape…This whole idea of whether or not you come back is completely new to us. It’s definitely possible, but we have no idea.”
