Hayley Kiyoko truly came out to her fans last year, and not a lot of people noticed.
You might have seen and watched the former CSI: Cyber actress and singer’s video for “Girls Like Girls”, but probably didn’t realize it was her own story.
“I felt like I was finally telling my story for the first time. The yearning feelings I had and also the feeling of being so alone. I think that’s why people connected with the music video.
Not only because they too have experienced deeply liking someone, but also the sadness and longing that comes with it,” Hayley wrote for Paper magazine.
Hayley also touched on her own sexuality: “I told Lily [May Young, songwriter] that I always say ‘you’ and ‘them’ and never the pronoun ‘her’ in all my songs because I was afraid it wouldn’t connect. We talked more about concepts and my experiences, and how I loved the idea of stealing another guy’s girl because that was always a fantasy of mine. Growing up, everything I did was always about girls. I took dance because of girls. I got involved in student council because of girls. Not that I ever expected any of them to like me back, but I just felt comforted being around them, even if I could never date them.”
“Most of the time, you become confident after years of struggling during your young adulthood,” she continues. “I want to encourage the youth to find that confidence now. Not later. For them to know their own self-worth at an earlier age.”
Hayley Kiyoko put on such an amazing show on last night’s MTV Wonderland!
The musician performed a ton of her new songs, including “Gravel To Tempo” and “One Bad Night”, and also performed “Girls Like Girls” (our fave), “Palace” and “Pretty Girl”.
“Freaking out watching myself on MTV right now. What is happening. Is this real life?!?” Hayley shared on Twitter afterwards.
Speaking with PopCrush recently, she opened up about staying connected to her fans: “I stay after all my shows and meet everyone…it’s really important for me to meet the people that I’m connecting with. It’s so wonderful to hear people’s stories.”
Hayley added, “The thing with me, with what I’m doing, is it’s all bigger than me. The music and my stories and my perspective…it’s bigger than me. So to be able to meet the fans, because it’s not just my story; it’s their story and what they’re going through, and it’s cool to get to share that with them and make them feel like they’re not alone and that there’s someone out there who understands them. And I think that that’s something that a lot of people are not fortunate enough to have. So I have to make sure that they know I get it.”
The 25-year-old’s newest record features four tracks: “Gravel To Tempo”, “Pretty Girl”, “One Bad Night”, and “Ease My Mind”.
“My goal is to inspire my fans to find happiness in themselves earlier on, so they don’t have such a tough time growing up,” Hayley shared with Refinery29 about the EP. “The world is a hard, difficult place right now. But it can feel a little bit easier if you believe in yourself.”
Sarah Hyland puts a little sparkle in her outfit with a ton of bracelets in this new still from her Netflix movie, XOXO.
The film centers on group of early 20-somethings on a crazy adventure to the biggest EDM festival in America, XOXO, and JJJ has an exclusive clip to share!
The group of six strangers’ lives collide in one frenetic, dream-chasing, hopelessly romantic night. At the center is Ethan, a young DJ who gets a last minute slot to perform after his tracks go viral online days before the festival. This is a huge opportunity… if he can just make it there in one piece.

The 25-year-old musician and actress hit the stage to perform her new song, “Gravel To Tempo” and other songs off her upcoming EP, Citrine.
“Tomorrow I get to play my very first music festival. Dreamt of playing one ever since I was little. I appreciate every opportunity and am so thankful for those who are the first to take a chance on me, and to believe in my music,” Hayley wrote on Instagram before the show. “Every stepping stone in this music industry is a big one, they eventually add up and make a path. Thanks for rooting me on. Feeling grateful. See you tmrw. :) Xo #billboardhot100 #ny.”

Hayley Kiyoko is back with another amazing song called “Gravel To Tempo”, off her upcoming EP, Citrine.
The 25-year-old singer and actress debuted the track’s music video on Friday (August 5), and opened up about the visual.
“From the beginning of writing that song, I envisioned myself in front of all the girls I had crushes on in high school,” she shared. “I remember so well what it was like to idolize other people and look for validation from them. But then I grew up, and I realized: The only validation I need is from myself.”
Hayley added, “My goal is to inspire my fans to find happiness in themselves earlier on, so they don’t have such a tough time growing up,. The world is a hard, difficult place right now. But it can feel a little bit easier if you believe in yourself.”
